Some Windows 8.1 users who have installed the September 2017 update KB4038792 report that the installation broke Microsoft Account sign-ins on their devices.

[...] They receive the following error message when they try to sign in to a Microsoft Account on affected devices:

Sign in to your Microsoft account

Sorry, we couldn’t connect to Microsoft services right now. If this problem persist, search for “network problem” on the Start screen.

A Microsoft support employee confirmed the issue on September 22th, 2017 on Microsoft's Answers forum. A customer reported the issue on September 16th, 2017...

Microsoft promised that it will update the thread on the Microsoft Answers website when the update is available. [...] It is unclear how widespread the issue is. Microsoft said that it affects a small subset of users only.

Source 1 and 2.
I've been trying to set up a laptop for someone and ran into this issue.

Yes because that is sage advice in this day and age.
Auto updating for no reason is an innovation that is failing work in practice (at least with Microsoft). A reason is that Microsoft is testing software on users premises for free, not in internal labs as they should.

Hardly really... works for the majority of companies who have sane policies in place.

Oh, and MS do extensive testing in internal labs..

I know you don't want to believe me because it doesn't suit your very strange worldview.

1. Do these sane companies use the same version of Windoze?
2. These internal labs may exists, but it is evidently beyond their capabilities to do it properly, so stop posting nonsence.

You are not in a precious position of watching, as you made a bold statement and this statement is challenged by a simple question "do the use they same Windows?". So stop make derogatory statements, it doesn't help your case. Answering a question does.

Huh?

Could you share whatever you're smoking so the rest of us can potentially understand you
You are being offensive all the time and using personal remarks.

You made a statement and a such statement is challenged by a simple question "do they use they same Windows?". Your answer is 'many', typical answer for a common troll. So clarify your answer or pack your ass and walk away, as it is over.
