The Bolivian president halved his salary when he took office I believe. I like these stories. Shows people are not all selfish.

Of course, what do these guys really need to spend money on. Most things are paid for through state funding anyways.

I think Steve Jobs (Apple CEO) gets paid a dollar a year. But the perks of his positon more than make up for the low wages Apple pays him!

I think Steve just makes money off his stock options in Apple and Disney (I think it's them now ...)

And this guy dismissed his entire cabinet after a referendum ... I'd love to see the oh-so-unified anc do that ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mwai_Kibaki#Constitutional_referendum_and_dismissal_of_cabinet

Mwai Kibaki and President Thabo Mbeki have alot in common, both born in poor rural communities, both educated by missionaries, both studied economics in the UK :D

Also when Government wanted to give Cabinet members a seven percent increase, Mbeki called for it to be reduced

I don't think Mbeki feels that he's been successful yet, he wants to be President ( or something like that ) of the United States of Africa ( or something like that ) that's why I think he doesn't really want to step down from politics yet, his vision of a united Africa has not yet been realised - IMHO - I'm not sure if it ever will be - but he believes it, he really, really does

He wants to head up the UN I reckon. In any event, whether he wants to lead a country, a continent or a world body, one thing is for sure: He will need to learn how to balance his time with what is needed on a home front and on an international one. He will also need to be more approachable, particularly to the media.

thats a noble idea of mbeki ... but in doing so ... he has neglected his own country and has actually made his dream and much harder prospect.

Many african countries who have had dictators/president who plunged their countries resources are now moving the opposite direction,

Liberia - Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf
Congo - Joseph Kabila
Uganda - Yoweri Museveni

There are still those who are holding on to pwer and continue to lead their countries on a downfall link

President Mbeki is an introvert by nature, enjoying nothing more than reading and smoking his favourite cherry tobacco, he occassionally spends a little time practicing amateur photography, he has worked hard to improve his image of a cold, calculating businessmen by joking and laughing with particularly the media and at public gatherings - looking at the Mbeki who stepped out as President in 1999 and the one who will be leaving the Presidency there is a marked improvement

Although, it might not seem like it at first glance, his wife, Zanele Mbeki, is more of the extrovert - taking part in church services and night vigils, and quite often visiting local shopping centers to do grocery shopping ( without bodyguards ) talkign to shoppers and department store workers - on the rare occassion that the first lady speaks to the media - she pulls no punches in lambasting Government and their policies

as far as Mbeki's vision to head up the UN is concerned, I really do not think that is where he wants to be - Mbeki is ambitious/power hungry ( take your pick )and heading the UN would not give him the kind of power he wants

This would explain so much of his attitude to white people (and his infatuation with race) and the less than important role he places on his SA Presidency.

If we actually had a president (and a government) we could/would all cheer.

Each country first needs to get it's act together. No point in having a unity of corruption. Mwai Kibaki is leading the way at the moment IMO - if he had our infrastructure and natural resources at his disposal, there's no doubt in my mind that Kenya would be the most advanced country on the continent and well on it's way to becoming a true first world country.

Mbeki, while he may have good intentions at heart, lacks the urgency to get things done quickly. There are quite a few ministers who are obviously undeserving of their jobs. They forget that their job is to work for the citizens, not the other way around. If Mbeki truly and honestly had urgency to consider the best interests of the people, he would take immediate action against these ministers.
