Knitted men's clothing. But why?

The only way I can see this working is if society collapses and the only textiles we have access to is hemp.
Then this would be the easiest way to make garments and would be an alternative to leather.

OMW! while I was at the police station this morning a youngish guy came in to report a robbery at his house.

His shorts weren't exactly knitted but they were a VERY loosely woven cottony thread. Thin shirt unbuttoned to the waist but tucked into his shorts, full face clear plastic shield and a Panama hat.

My eyes almost popped out of my head.
