Project lead Martijn Kaijser said the team was looking to bring DRM to the platform.

For those who don't know, Digital Rights Management (DRM) is a way to enable copyright protection for digital media.

Enabling DRM on Kodi could encourage providers to bring their content to the Kodi platform without fear that it could be pirated, said Mr Kaijser.

Bringing more legitimate sources of copyrighted content to the Kodi platform would also change the software's reputation.

it seems they are taking their popularity for granted.

with so many ways to play your content from your own sources, why would you stick to them?

I doubt they'd shut down the plugin system as it stands, but this could mean things like Netflix and Hulu plug-ins for kodi which is a win.

It's open source, there will be a non-DRM branch shortly.

playing your own content would still work...accessing "illegal" streams via plugins is what they want to break. If they had their way, SKY (for example) would publish an addon for Kodi that users would pay to use or get to use free with their SKY subscription.

Kodi are trying to protect their product which is fair enough.

All for this, Kodi is a brilliant piece of software that's being brought down by hacked together pirate add ons, which when they inevitably break end up with a forum thread saying "Kodi is buffering".

Or the myriad of posts saying "I use Kodi to watch free live sport", no you don't, you use the add on. All this does is prevent genuine broadcasters from developing on the software.

Uhm, that's the whole point of Kodi for me

Shame :p

I'm sure alternatives will pop-up...as long as the alternative is smaller than Kodi, chances are the content protection people won't be able to shut it down.

yes, as i said, why would you want to use kodi to stream your legit content if there are so many other ways to do it. the main reason most people use kodi is because of these add-ons. lets not kid ourselves.

current legit add-ons are region blocked anyway, so nothing different from using any other method available.

you consider this a product? its more of a project to me. i believe they are trying to make it a product by the sound of this article.

something else will just take its place as people have mentioned.

I don't disagree that some people only use Kodi because of the plugins that allow illegal streaming. But I disagree that that's the entire Kodi user base...why is Plex so popular if Kodi does what Plex does (basically) plus comes with illegal streaming?

Kodi's user base will probably get smaller if \ when illegal addons are blocked but I can see it growing if the integration to legal streaming services is done well. I'd rather have one interface to navigate with common controls than an app for Netflix, another for Amazon, another for DSTV Now, another for Showmax etc. each with their own interpretation of what a UI should be.

i said most didn't i, not the entire use base. plex is a better interface for playing media imo, which is what i had in mind when wondering about the use of kodi after this change, if it happens.

theres no difference between selecting an app like Netflix or selecting an add-on inside kodi for netfix by amounts of clicks or effort or time, actually the Netflix app functions pretty good with suggestions and play where you left it last and all that.

then theres also playing direct from torrents, i guess there will be an increase in torrent traffic again.. or wait, that would be streaming traffic anyway if you stream from torrents..
