When it comes to high-end vehicles, Swedish automaker Koenigsegg is known for pushing boundaries. Now it has done away with one of the hallmarks of a sports car, the clutch. Its new hybrid, the Regera, can go from zero to 250 miles per hour in under 20 seconds--without a conventional transmission.

The Regera (which means “to reign” in Swedish) combines a powerful V8 twin-turbo engine with three electric drivetrain motors: one at each rear wheel and one at the engine’s crankshaft. The electric motor at the crankshaft drives the car from a dead stop to about 20 miles per hour. Then, the 1,100-horsepower engine kicks in.

It powers the rear wheels via a single gear, what Koenigsegg is calling Direct Drive. This reduces the type of power loss seen in transmission drivetrain by more than 50 percent. It also makes the car lighter, more responsive during acceleration, and more fuel-efficient.

The Regera is not the first hybrid to forgo a transmission (Honda’s 2014 Accord Hybrid beat Koenigsegg to the punch), but it is the first combustion-engine car to do so. This means there’s less reason to fear that high-performance vehicles will be legislated out of existence by fuel-economy and emissions standards.

Koenigsegg Regera: customers to first experience car in November

It’s over four years since it was revealed, but customers of the Koenigsegg Regera will experience the car in November

Despite the car’s initial advent at the Geneva show in 2014, a “near-running” prototype was displayed at this year’s Geneva show, with the car nearing completion ahead of customer deliveries.

The car’s lack of transmission suggests the end of manual gearboxes from Koenigsegg, but the company boss clarified that on other models, customers could equip a manual transmission if so desired. He refused this option for the Agera RS, though, given the re-engineering work required to fit one to the car.

Design of the Regera was a collaboration between Koenigsegg and his brother-in-law - a car designer - with Koenigsegg tweaking ideas that the designer showed him. “Who came up with what is a little difficult to say in the end,” said Koenigsegg.

80 units of the hybrid hypercar will be made, and were announced at the car’s unveiling to cost $1.89 million (around £1.23m at the time) pre-tax. It’s described as more comfortable and luxurious than the Agera, the replacement of which is due to be revealed at the Geneva motor show next year, and will sit alongside the upcoming model as the brand’s second model line.

Despite the spreading of the brand into two markets, Koenigsegg insisted that the company would not spread to the supercar segment to compete with Porsche and Ferrari, given the saturation of the segment.

“The big players have been at that game for along time now. They’ve perfected that game,” said Koenigsegg. If Koenigsegg were to produce a car for this market, it would be too expensive to be competitive to interest the market, he said. “It would be fun to throw a few more hornets in the nest but right now we have other priorities.”

Nodding at the brand’s previous intention to rescue Swedish brand Saab before it went out of business, Koenigsegg also clarified that the company is too small to produce mass-market models using its camless technology, and instead would pursue providing the technology to mass-market manufacturers.
