My company is considering sending me to Kroonstad in the Northern Free State for a 3 year project.

Might make it worth my while in allowances & include accommodation & relocation cost for my family.

Anyone hail from this town or has anything good or bad to say about it?

It's not super small but it's not exactly large either. Close enough to Jhb and Bfn but forget about many nightlife options. Limited school options but they're not bad from what I hear.

I'd stay far away. It's one of those places slowly rotting away.

What is your company doing there?
I'd be very careful as it will be easy for you to be forgotten in a place like Kroonstad.

The bad:
Water is very dirty for the past 4 years.
Roads are horrible(Not maintained).
Crime levels are low but size/ratio factor.
Garbage collection somethings pulls 2 weeks to collect your garbage, you have to phone and swear.
No 8ta connection, NO LTE.
Vodacom and MTN coverage good only in the city.
Cellc networks is over used!
No Malls, But you can travel welkom(25minutes drive).
No Movie/Cinema's.

The good:
Telkom ADSL at my place is 4MB/s and that's max out.
There 4 Telkom Wifi hotspot location(If you ask me I going to tell you 3 of 4, since the one I abuse and now my brother abuses it).
There are 5 other wifi hotspots(Always-on,..).
The high schools are good and primary schools are decent.
All the bank are there. There 2 x pick and pay.
There's shop-rite, checkers and many shops.
No Traffic! Max time to reach one place to other is 10 minutes.
There are over 10 petrol stations.
There are over 9 franchises for food/take aways.
Simple life. Its not A FARM!

Now in Johannesburg, I miss my family not the town through.

I will be working on the N1 upgrade project. I'll be placed back in the Cape Town office when the project is done.

My wife and kids says we should pack up and go and rent out our Cape Town house.

Please go visit the town first before you go. See for yourself and then decide.
If it's a good and temporary career move it's maybe ok but do yourself a favour and check it out first.

That is great advice.
Dark Agent seems to have lots of great info too.
I know people who stayed there, all the kids moved out as soon as they could, but they had a good upbringing there.
They still have an aunt who stays there now and she loves it.

I won't be able to check the town out beforehand. It's 1200km away. I have colleagues that visited & stayed in the town and they say it's not too bad.

Towns (excluding CPT) I've stayed in for 6 months or more include Turfontein (JHB), Beaufort West, Mossel Bay, Port Edward, Bredasdorp & Kakamas. If Kroonstad is better than 3 of these towns then I'll definitely take the opportunity.

Make financial sense, especially if you can rent out your house in Cape Town for enough to cover the bond.

We'll have about a R600 shortfall if we rent out our house. Accommodation that side would be paid for by the company.

I will be meeting with the project manager tomorrow to discuss this opportunity & which allowances and perks would be on offer.

Only Mossel Bay is better than Kroonstad. It is a large town obscured from the passers-by, but pleasant and with good infrastructure.
