Durban - Fed up with having their livestock devoured by lions that occasionally escape from the nearby Hluhluwe-Imfolozi park owned by Ezemvelo, the community of Okhukho in northern KwaZulu-Natal took matters into their own hands and roasted the culled lions.

Ezemvelo rangers had killed the lions on Friday. But before they could be taken, the angry residents started skinning and roasting them in public.

In the past few weeks, the community had complained to Ezemvelo, alleging the lions were wreaking havoc.

Recently, Msizi Myaka, an activist from the area wrote to the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Barbara Creecy to complain about the matter.

Creecy has since promised to intervene

On Sunday evening. Myaka took to the WhatsApp of the community and shared pictures of the skinned and roasted lions.

“I respect my people. Look what they have done, they are eating the lions that have been feasting on their livestock. They killed the most feared animal and are eating. Some of you will now have issues with their marriages,” he posted in the group.

Myaka confirmed to IOL that the community feasted on the lions and shared pictures of them having what looks like a braai of jubilant community members.

The spokesperson of Ezemvelo, Musa Mntambo, confirmed that the community feasted on the lions before they could be removed after they were shot and killed by rangers while aboard a chopper.

Strong as a lion?

In some moral sense these lions were culled prior to being... yah well. I do have questions though: whose in whose habitat here?

Something tells me that the conservation part here was ignored, and that the culling was to appease.

Dare touch stray cattle from the community and it is a massive problem. But if a zebra gets out where they cut the fence, it is okay if they kill and eat it.

My problem is with the opening sentence,

"Fed up with having their livestock devoured by lions that occasionally escape"

was Ezemvelo aware that their lions occasionally escape, and did they address the issue prior to the culling? Then, why are the lions escaping or are the cattle 'straying' on Ezemvelo land?

Reading up on Ezemvelo's Facebook,

The Conservation and Environmental Affairs Portfolio Committee Chairperson, honorable S.W Mshengu has again appealed to the newly appointed Nature Conservation Services Board to provide strategic leadership, allow Ezemvelo management to manage and promised that, as a portfolio committee they will provide oversight.

Honorable S.W Mshengu has expressed his frustration regarding the amount of compensation that the entity has to pay due to poor fencing at Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park.

so what is the symptom here? Someone is ****ing up.

True or not, who knows

Ezemvelo has blamed the community for cutting down the fence, thus leading to their game going out and inflicting damage on community livestock and fields.

No no

These aren't angry residents in the community

Just savages, gemors

They would have done this anyway regardless of the livestock chowing

Just look at lorries that break down near townships, remember that cow they started cutting to bits while it was still alive

hmmm yes, people, they're not people.

Remember reading somewhere that carnivore meat really doesn't taste nice at all either....
Ive seen guys running off with dead and rotting chickens that one of the disgusting local chicken concentration camps had dumped in the veld...

Who knows what they died of but it was dinner for some...

A friend of mine does a lot of work with Ezemvelo, cutting of fences and the use of snares for bush meat along the borders is a common problem.
Snares all over....hate the things...Always run and cycle with a small pair of wire cutters...
The mangy locals that set these up must hate me...
During lockdown it was intense..some of the snares would catch a bus....
