A 23-year-old KwaZulu-Natal woman faces a fraud charge after reportedly posing as a medical intern and consulting and treating patients at five hospitals in the province.

The Sunday Times reported that Nokwanda Ndlovu, a high school dropout, claimed to be a Wits University medical student and worked at several facilities between November 2017 and December 2019.

Her first false stint, according to police records, was in 2017 as a medical intern at Benedictine Hospital in Nongoma when she was 20.

The publication reported that she claimed to be an orphan who needed to complete her internship to finish her degree.

It also reported that the woman was arrested for fraud for impersonating a medical intern at Nkandla Hospital, but while she was out on bail, continued her "internship" at a clinic outside Pietermaritzburg

KZN health department opens probe into case of 'fake' medical intern

Simelane-Zulu however denied that Ndlovu had duped the department for years, posing as a doctor for years saying this was not possible.

“During the holidays, student doctors are given an opportunity to work in facilities and management must be able to follow up and ensure that they have got the right information from the medical schools that they come from. This lady moved around some of our facilities, it is alleged, during that particular time posing as if she is a medical doctor,” she explained.

So theoretically it's impossible to do this. In reality we keep on seeing this. Right.

I did this, unintentionally, back in the late '70s.

A friend had connected with a lampost after being knocked off his motorbike and was in ICU, comatose, in the Joburg Gen.
I was working summer break in the Wits Physics Department, doing X-Ray Crystallography, and so had to wear a lab coat and dosimeter.
For several days - after clocking out at Wits - I would drive my bike to the Joburg Gen to visit my friend. I waltzed through the whole hospital and into the ICU, and the nurses on duty took me for a student doctor.
They even addressed me as "doctor". I'm ashamed to say I didn't contradict them at all.

All this just goes to show that the old adage about the beehive is true: once you've crossed the threshold into the hive, the bees assume you're meant to be there, and leave you alone.

Mental evaluation for KZN woman who posed as a medical intern

A 23-year-old KwaZulu-Natal woman, Nokwanda Ndlovu, will soon exchange her civilian clothes for a hospital gown.

This after Nkandla regional magistrate Morne Swanepoel on Monday ruled that the woman be sent to Fort Napier hospital for mental evaluation

Ndlovu, who was represented by a legal aid lawyer, made a short appearance in the Nkandla regional court on a fraud charge for allegedly posing as a medical intern at a hospital in Nkandla.

The court heard from a report compiled by a psychiatric specialist that Ndlovu had no signs of psychosis, however the psychiatrist could not make a conclusive determination on her mental state as she failed to appear for a second session.

“Based on my initial assessment there were no obvious signs of psychosis. I was not able to carry out the second examination since the accused did not arrive for the second appointment.
