Covid-19 Lambda variant in South Africa — what you should know

Amid South Africa's third wave of Covid-19 thanks to the spread of the Delta variant, concerns have grown around another mutation of the virus which has drawn the attention of global health experts.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently added the Lambda variant as its seventh and latest Covid-19 “variant of interest”.

Initially called C.37, Lambda was first detected in Peru in December 2020, where it quickly spread to become the dominant variant.

It has been responsible for more than 80% of cases recorded in that country since April and has been found in 31 countries over the last four weeks. Outside of Peru, its spread is most prevalent among the country's immediate neighbours in South America.

Explain us why we jumped from Epsilon to Lambda?

Dom drol, people today can't count anymore. Take a look at Zuma and Biden. Numbers are Greek to them and most others too. Not even mentioning Greek since none of them knows it.

What happened to the 5 versions between Delta & Lambda?

Isn’t it obvious? The lambda is that Peruvian furry camel animal which is why they’ve named it that.

How come we are using the Greek alphabet when it is obvious this is a Chinese manufactured thing? Why not the Chinese alphabet?

First the 24 in the Greek alphabet.

Then they can start with the 26 English alphabet.

I am sure in the next 100 years, we will start with the Chinese alphabet too.

They're around. The WHO classes them in 3 categories, Variants of Concern (Alpha, Beta, Delta Gamma, aka what's killing people mostly), Variants of Interest (Eta, Iota, Kappa, Lambda, aka what's just started and hopefully doesn't spread exponentially, and then former variants of interest (Epsilon, Zeta, Theta aka didn't spread much).

Epsilon variant started in California.
Zeta variant started in Rio de Janeiro.
Eta variant started in Nigeria.
Theta variant started in the Philippines and Japan.
Iota variant started in New York.
Kappa variant started in India.
Lambda variant started in Peru.

It's a good thing most of the country was vaccinated.

We can chill.

Btw the SA variant seems special.

It seems to be the common dominator between most variants.

Lambda is similar to SA variant, apparently the vaccine will be protective because of these similarities.
