Lancia says it is eyeing the South African market for a relaunch

Lancia will be introducing an all-new Ypsilon in 2024 which will be offered in hybrid and full-electric versions. With this product, the Italian heritage brand, now operating under the Stellantis group, has expressed its desire to benchmark the likes of Mercedes-Benz and rapidly expand into right-hand drive markets such as South Africa.

Based on information sourced by Automotive News Europe, company boss Luca Napolitano put forward a 10-year plan to Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares for the relaunch of the iconic Lancia. As previously reported, this will consist of a new Ypsilon in 2024 and a compact crossover expected in 2026. This will be rounded off by a fully electric compact hatchback which is expected to arrive in 2028.

In an interview on Friday, Napolitano said “Clearly volumes are important, but our targets are about profitability,”

“We still need to work and need to look at a benchmark … which for us is Mercedes,” Napolitano said. “I don’t mean we want to fight against Mercedes, that would be naive, but that is an example of what we look at.”

While Alfa Romeo and DS are global brands, Lancia’s target is to move to Europe, initially targeting Germany and France, where electrification is moving faster, then adding countries including Spain, Belgium, Austria and the Nordics, he said.

“We initially target to make 25 per cent to 30 per cent of our sales abroad, to reach 50-50,” he said. “Our aggressive electrification strategy and our focus on market segments which are very strong in Europe will help us.”

Napolitano added that Lancia has been aimed to be the brand within Stellantis with the highest share of recycled materials. “We would like to build cars with a significant portion of recycled materials,” he said.

Lancia’s 10-year plan does not include getting back in-touch with its motorsport roots but it does have the intent to expand outside Europe. It will need to do this to grow credibility in the premium segment and to focus on priorities.

“However, in the coming year, if things go well, why not trying to bring (Lancia models with) right-hand drive also in Japan, South Africa or Australia?” he said.

Lancia will mimic Mercedes in pursuit of a future inside Stellantis

Brand will pursue profitability over volume to secure future

Lancia will pursue profitability over volume to secure a long-term home in the 14 brand Stellantis stable and try to mimic Mercedes-Benz to do so, its boss Luca Napolitano said.

Lancia has in recent years retreated from a past littered with world rally titles and iconic cars such as the Delta to a single model, the Ypsilon, in just one market, Italy.

Some analysts have regarded Lancia as one of the least strategic brands within Stellantis, which was formed this year by the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Group.

However, Napolitano has presented a 10-year plan to Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares to relaunch Lancia, based on three new models: the new Ypsilon in 2024, both hybrid and battery electric, and a compact crossover expected in 2026 followed by a compact hatchback in 2028, both full-electric models.

"Clearly volumes are important, but our targets are about profitability," Napolitano said in an interview on Friday.

Lancia, which alongside Alfa Romeo and DS was grouped in the pool of Stellantis brands cooperating in the premium market, needed to continue on this high-end path, he added.

"We still need to work and need to look at a benchmark ... which for us is Mercedes," Napolitano said. "I don't mean we want to fight against Mercedes, that would be naive, but that is an example of what we look at."

Napolitano said that Lancia aimed to be the brand within Stellantis with the highest share of recycled materials. "We would like to build cars with a significant portion of recycled materials," he said.

Lancia's 10-year plan does not include going back to motor racing and expanding outside Europe, as it needs credibility in the premium segment and to focus on priorities, Napolitano said.

"However, in the coming year, if things go well, why not trying bringing (Lancia models with) right-hand drive to Japan, South Africa or Australia?" he said.

Lancia's expansion plan in Europe will be based on a light network of dealers, only in the largest urban areas, helping it to keep costs down and boost profitability.

Lancia eyeing SA return after brand reboot, which will see it emulate Mercedes

Lancia will pursue profitability over volume to secure a long-term home in the 14 brand Stellantis stable and try to emulate German carmaker Mercedes to do so, its boss Luca Napolitano told Reuters recently.

Lancia has in recent years retreated from a past littered with world rally titles and iconic cars such as the Delta to a single model, the Ypsilon, in just one market, Italy.

Some analysts have regarded Lancia as one of the least strategic brands within Stellantis, the world's fourth largest carmaker, which was formed this year by the merger of Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot's parent company PSA.

However, Napolitano has presented a 10-year plan to Stellantis Chief Executive Carlos Tavares to relaunch Lancia, based on three new models: the new Ypsilon in 2024, both hybrid and battery electric, and a compact crossover expected in 2026 followed by a compact hatchback in 2028, both fully electric.

Always fancied a Lancia in the 70's/80's but the decent ones:-
Lancia Montecarlo

Lancia Delta

1970 Lancia Fulvia Sport Zagato

1982 Lancia 037 Stradale

Lots of them

Owned two Fulvias in the 70's ... wonderful cars !

While chatting cars with a native in Rome some years ago I discovered that I'd been mispronouncing Lancia all my life. Like most of my countrymen I said "LARN-see-yah". My Eyetalian interlocuter look at me with puzzled bemusement. "Never heard of it," he winked. "No such Italian car". "But we do have a company called "LUNCHya".

Edit:

CLASSIC DRIVE: Lancia Thema 8.32

At the time of the Thema's launch, CAR magazine South Africa ended its driving impression in 1987 by stating, “The 8.32 is an exciting recruit to the ranks of the world’s finest cars; not so much a wolf in sheep’s clothing, as a greyhound in a mink coat…”

I think I left my own mink coat back in Cape Town. I wonder if the 8.32’s owner would advocate another 3 000 km?

The 10 year strategic plan set to reinvigorate Lancia

The historic Italian brand that has fallen from grace over the past 3 decades looks set to reinvigorate their product lineup over a 10 year strategic plan. The Stellantis subsidiary has been given the green light to go ahead with a new Ypsilon and Delta while models past 2028 will be EV-only.

There was a time where Lancia was at the forefront of innovation and trumped the motorsport scene however the Italian brand has fallen into disrepute somewhat, with only one model currently on offer in only their home market. Under the new guidance of Stellantis and their CEO; Carlos Tavares, a brighter future is looking probable for the 115 year old automaker.

In 2024, as part of the 10 year strategic plan, a new Ypsilon will be launched with a fully electrified range. It will continue to be the smallest vehicle in Lancia’s lineup measuring in at approximately 4 metres long and competing in Europe’s B-segment. Thereafter a new flagship crossover believed to be called the Auerlia, a historic nameplate for the brand, will join the portfolio in 2026 and compete against models like the Opel Insignia and Citroen C5 X with its 4,6 metre long stature.

Unfortunately they are reviving only the name, and not the spirit that made the Lancia what it was ... :crying::crying:

Here’s How Lancia Plans to Go Electric

The first EV is on the way soon, with Lancia resurrecting old nameplates along the way.

AUTOWEEK
  • Lancia plans three EV models, with the Ypsilon due in 2024 in hybrid and EV form.
  • The automaker plans to introduce only new electric models starting in 2026, with its lineup planned to consist only of electric models by 2028.
  • Lancia intends to bring back the Delta as an EV for enthusiasts in 2028, after two other EVs arrive on sale first.

It may have been a while since new Lanciaswere sold stateside—over 40 years, in fact—but the brand is still alive in Europe, despite all odds. The last 20 years had been rocky ones for the marque, with its corporate parents struggling to keep the lineup alive, often with the help of Chrysler models, with models like the Chrysler 300 being rebadged as the Lancia Thema for European buyers. In the process the brand lost some of its unique identity, as many industry observers would concede.

But now Lancia has a new sense of direction for the future, with the brand poised to go EV-only in just a few years. Parent company Stellantis detailed a 10-year plan for the brand, with the first electric model—the Lancia Ypsilon hatch that will also be offered in hybrid flavor—due to arrive in 2024. The Ypsilon will be followed by a flagship model in 2026, with the automaker only disclosing that it will "enter the largest segment in Europe" with this model, which will be a crossover. An EV for car enthusiasts will follow in 2028, badged Delta.
"Today is an important day," said Luca Napolitano, Lancia brand CEO. "Lancia is now ready for Europe, taking a first step to become a credible and respected brand in the premium segment. Our ten-year plan, approved last September, is now taking shape, step by step. We are the Italian Elegance brand and this is our Renaissance."
Does it sound like Lancia is thinking of bringing back the Delta Integrale? There's nothing wrong with remixing past hits, and it sounds like Lancia will get there by releasing a few more mainstream crowd-pleasers first.

We can expect the Ypsilon to be underpinned by the STLA Small platform when it arrives in 2024, to be shared with a number of other European brands in Stellantis' orbit, while the 2026 flagship crossover will likely use the STLA Medium platform.

The automaker plans three new models in the coming years, including an EV for enthusiasts.
LANCIA
Starting in 2026, Lancia will launch only new battery-electric models, with its lineup slated to consist entirely of battery-electric models by 2028. That's a short timeline by any measure, and it will of course rely on corporate parent Stellantis and its brands going in the same direction.
"Innovation and timeless design have always been our core values and to these we want to add sustainability, customer centricity and responsibility, because we look to the future with great ambition," Napolitano added.

It's worth noting, the announced timeline paints a three-model lineup, one likely to once again be underpinned by shared Stellantis platforms. Such a lineup consisting of a hatch, crossover, and a performance model sounds realistic as it won't be trying to stretch the brand into unfamiliar segments, which has certainly happened with some frequency over the last 30 years.

"Inside the new vehicles, Lancia customers will be welcomed in a typical Italian elegance style," the automaker noted. "Inspired by the exclusive materials of its past iconic vehicles, like the Gamma, Thema, and Flavia, the next-generation Lancia vehicles will provide a comfortable environment with simple and intuitive on-board technology which is in line with its DNA."
It's clear that Lancia aims to remain a premium brand in the future as it moves toward an all-electric lineup, with design also playing an important role in the marque's pitch to buyers.

But whether we'll see any of its offerings here in the states is a different question, with Alfa Romeo and Maserati already playing the role of the premium Italian brands stateside. There's certainly room for two Italian brands from Stellantis in the states, but perhaps not three.
