Hi All

I'm planning to take the Ooklets to Lanseria, to watch some aeroplanes etc. But now I want to see if I can rather plan an outing for homeschoolers.

Is there somebody I can call for more information and arrangements?

TIA

Why not rather go to Joburg International? Frequency of take offs and landings will be much MUCH higher and the variety of airliners coming in and going out will be much greater also. We have all models landing there. 737 and A320 family. 777/A330 family and also the 787. If you get your timing right then you will also get to see the A380 double deckers. At Lanseria you will only see 737 and smaller private aircraft.

Viewing deck at ORT sucks though. Enclosed -don't get the noise :( there is a spot in nearby impala park that I found better for viewing.

Ja, it is not the greatest, but purely for the wide variety of airliners that one can see there I would rather go there instead of Lanseria.

Nice restaurant with a viewing deck at Lanseria in the main terminal building. As far as I remember, you won't be able to see the aircraft touchdown as the view is blocked by hangers, but you do get to see the entire apron with most of the runway in view as well. The viewing deck is outside and you really get to hear the aircraft, while enjoying a nice meal.

Think the name has changed, but back when I was training, the restaurant was called Wings.

Depends if RWY 07 or RWY 25 is in use. The above statement is only true for RWY 25.

Correct. Back in my day, the runways were 06/24 lol. Haven't been there since they opened the new runway.

I would also suggest that if OP feels like seeing smaller aircraft, a visit to Rand airport in Germiston will do a world of good. Harvard Cafe is usually a good bet to have a good meal, beer and watch the weekend warriors. SAA museum is also there as well.

If you talk nicely to a training facility such as Cirrus (say you are interested in learning to fly) you can get a gate pass for R10 just below the passenger terminal, and get "escorted" to their hanger, after which you can walk around the immediate area without a problem, just don't walk towards the RWY or Terminal unless you want to test the security's response time
