As the title says, I have a Dell laptop that doesn't charge. I just bought a new battery for it (non-Dell branded) and have tried it with a brand new Dell charger.

It runs off the battery, and it runs off the charger, but it doesn't charge the battery...

Any ideas if there's something I can do? Has anyone run into this before?

When you buy a battery, you need to buy a compatible charger too.

You might have a dud cell in that battery pack. I have also seen some dodgy soldering too. All laptop batteries are made up of packs joined together in a particular configuration.

HP batteries also contain a memory circuit to gauge battery levels for when it is reconnected to the circuit. Some these must be kept at a positive voltage when new cells are added, or the battery will not restart

I probably should have said that it was the exact same with my previous (Dell branded) battery before it completely gave up the ghost...
It might indicate faulty charging circuit on the laptop. In such case old battery might be still good, but flat.

What is model number of original battery? Is it smart battery (it would be written 'smart' on the label)? What was charging behaviour before you replaced it? Did it died suddenly and refused to charge above certainl level (say 70%), or it was constantly losing the charge over the time instead being re-charged?

perhaps the charging port/jack on the laptop is broken?

does the charger's connector fit securely?

Dell laptops use a special charging plug. The middle electrode in the plug tells the computer what charger is being used

It could be possible that the battery is not compatible with the charger.

The original is a Dell Type WU946 battery. Not smart. At first it stopped recharging with only my charger, and then is stopped charging altogether. It would constantly lose charge until 0%.
Right. As it loses charge constantly, it is charging circuit in the laptop, not a battery. But:

+1. It could be a problem of not charging.
If doesn't help, someone must look at the laptop.
Get ASAP a friend with compatible laptop to recharge both batteries on his/her laptop to 30-50% and keep them away from the laptop till it is repaired. For now you can work with a charger and no battery plugged in.
