Laser printer, which one?

At some stage I would need to get a laser printer. However my worry is the cost of the toner, I have a laser samsung but the toner was R1500 for a new one.

Is that the normal cost for a toner or is there a better a better solution?

Budget for the printer R1000-R1500
Toner not sure, less than 1K ???

Thanks.

Personal experience - always HP.

Received some good advice recently... am almost convinced to pack my colour laser into a box and revert to a new HP Deskjet. New ink technology gives better quality and is much cheaper per page.

Get one that you can get generic cartridges for. Epson seem to have gone down the tubes of late, but I see you can get generics for HP now as well.

My personal favourite brands are between Brother and HP.

I don't like inkjets just because they tend to die pretty quickly in a high volume environment and I still think the higher end laserjets are still cheaper to print than any inkjet (make sure the printer takes X/volume toners before purchase).

super duper happy with our lexmark c540n. got it for R3.5k to R4k beginning of last year. fast, quiet, colour, excellent print quality, good toner life (separate cartridges per colour)

worth getting the double-sided printing add-on for a few hundred more.

Have you seen the price of Lexmark cartridges? And you cant get generics.

I recently bought an HP LaserJet M1217nfw multifunction printer. The original HP cartridges (1500 pages) cost around R1000 or ~R750 each if you purchase two at once. I have just purchased some Katun cartridges which cost around R200 from www.xeratrading.co.za which will hopefully produce decent quality printouts. From what I've seen, the cartridges for the Samsung MFP's such as the SCX-3405 family (MLT-D101S/XSG cartridges etc.) are region locked which increases the cost of the generic cartridge chips that are needed to trick the printer into accepting the refilled cartridge. Take a look at the reviews on amazon.com and amazon.co.uk for generic/compatible/refilled/remanufactured cartridges for the model of printer that you are considering before purchasing anything.

Some of the latest Epson inkjet printers that I have seen at IC have large refillable external ink tanks and very low page costs. The HP Ink Advantage range of inkjets also have cheaper original cartridges but still cost much more to run than a refillable solution like the Epson.

For lasers always HP.

For years I had a HP5P now I have a LaserJet Pro 200. Network, WiFi, Fax, Copier, Scanner and Colour Printer. Fantastic printer.

And the best, it was bought with EBucks!

Currently, rather look at HP. Even if good quality remanufactured/generic toners are not avail yet, they should be in a few months.
Whether original or generic.... the HP toners are likely to be cheaper.

If you are looking at a colour printer, also consider the 6000 series, or the 8000 series. They have higher capacity cartridges. Some of the XL black cartridges can print 2000+ pages per cartridges, as per tests done by HP.

wifi networking also a plus, if in lightening prone area (not all models)

example of print capacities/potential...

The HP CE285A toner prints approx 1600 pages per unit.
The HP 950xl black can potentially print approx 2300 pages.

each type of printer has its negatives.
The ink printer though a supurb printer, has the potential to develop print head problems(all brands) if left standing for indefinate/long periods.
