Latency issues with HSDPA :/

Hi, i've posted about this problem before but still no solution.

Can someone please explain to me why some days I can play Warcraft just fine online and others, I get about 10% packet loss or more? Before I upgraded to HSDPA (ie. 3G) this problem was non-existent. I'm getting the feeling that vodacom was not ready to launch this product.

At the moment I am considering cancelling my contract so if you could please tell me how big a penalty vodacom will whack me with aswell (had it for about 5 months now / 2 years)

Obviously you're dropping packets, we need to understand why.

Either something is broken (you always get lost packet in a large %) or it could just be due to congestion (it sometimes is bad).

What is your experience?

I dunno, its weird that the one day I have 0% package loss when I ping -t the server for a minute or so (ME = :D ) and then other days 9-10% package loss (ME = )

My latency is fine (even on days with the packet loss), its just those packets that gets lost that disconnects me from games.

Couldn't get a patern to this behaviour, doubt its the weather, cant be distance to tower since I'm like 150m away (its its that far). Dunno what else?

It just feels that HSDPA is not as reliable as 3G used to be? With 3G i had more delay in my games (higher latency) but I never droped from games.

Any suggestions?

Thank you very much for your reply, I really hope we can fix this problem since the primary use of my internet is playing warcraft online.

When you measure packet loss, do you do it with ping?

What happens when you do a ping -t in a dos box and then run another ping?

I.e., if you keep the connection active all the time, do you still see the packets being dropped?

Yes I do it with ping in a dos prompt (ping -t www.war3.co.za)
I let it run for a while and every +- 10th packet lags out.

On good days, none of them lags out (never like 5% packet loss, always 0% or 10%). I have no idea what the problem can be. Have tried it with another HSDPA data card and problem still occurs some days.

Err, ye i keep it alive for a minute or so, if that is what you meant.

Thnx for the help

Run a local ping in another box, ping -t smtp.vodacom.co.za and let both pings run.

What do you get?

Get same results when I run both. Both runs fine for about ten pings, then pauses, times out and then run for another ten before timing out again (goes on like this until I stop it).

average for warcraft server: 172ms
average for vodacom smtp server: 140ms

They both time out at the same time, each time.

Thanks for the help thus far V3G, I really appriciate your effort.

Data loss ditto

I ran both pings at the same time and get following result

ping -t www.war3.co.za
packest sent = 36 received = 33 8% data loss average reponse = 293 ms

ping -t smtp.vodacom.co.za
packest sent = 37 received = 34 10% data loss average reponse = 270 ms

Have you had any luck resolving the packet loss or heard anything further from V3G ? ?

I have the same problem, in the evenings I have major packet loss sometimes up to 20% and dropps connection. In the mornings I can ping for an hour without any packet loss.

This is on local and international sites, it is like the network is congested, maybe Vodacom did not plan for this much grouth in the HSDPA market.

K, no replies. I would really like to know how much it is going to cost me to cancel my HSDPA contract, ASDL just seems like a better option at the moment.

How many months have you had yours for? I may consider taking the contract off your hands for you....
