Latency on HSDPA/3G

Ok, I'd like to know what is the normal latency playing over HSDPA/3G. Most of the time it was between 950ms and 1500ms, so it's in the red all the time. Yesterday night it went up to 5400ms. Later in a less populated area it went down to 550ms.

Oh, and I tried EDGE got 19000ms

Is this normal, and if not do you have any ideas on improving it. Please?

I'm using a program that force the modem to stay in 3G mode, but the signal is strong where I'm playing anyway.

So it seems I'm getting really bad latency :(

I've been playing WoW for quite a few years now on 3G/HSDPA, on the US servers it used to run at about 800ms+, decided to start afresh on the EU and was running at 400ms-500ms. But since the expantion was released it's running at about 1000ms most of the time, getting some serious spikes like the ones you mention but also saw over the weekend that if I log in at about 5am it seems to return to the normal 400ms-500ms.

Hopefully it will start getting better again once the hype of the new expantion dies down.

Have you tried a different provider ?

If MTN try Vodacom
If Vodacom try MTN

But based on the above figures I'm guessing you are on Vodacom currently. Go buy a Pre-paid MTN sim and see if the latency is different.

It all depends on location. Mine however is around 450 - 550 sometimes 600 odd. But mostly around 500ms

Yeah I'm using Vodacom. My modem is network locked though. So I could test it on EDGE during lunch. I've tried my MTN sim in my HTC, it just says no sim installed, don't know what it's problem is, maybe it's because it's a 32KB sim.

Have vodacom replace your Modem, they are not allowed to network lock them ;)

On Vodacom i get about 550-800 usually, MTN was just terrible for me and i lived like 900metres from the tower. Also ADSL has been under preforming lately.

I knew about mobiles, but I didn't know about modems. I thought they all were locked.

Ok, so I got the modem to work on MTN, it wasn't locked. Ammm it was that I set it to 3G and it doesn't look like MTN has 3G here. :(

I don't know if my latency will improve seeing that I'll be using EDGE.

Give it a go on Edge and see ;)

I play on Edge sometimes if UMTS is congested

I'll give it a try during lunch. But even if it work it'll kind of suck, because I used my hole data bundle to down load the patches and I've already bought 2Gig more

Well if it work at least I'll have some better play lol

how do you force 3G/HSPA?

The edge connection (I'm right above you Pitbull) kind of sucks and because I get signals from several towers it automatically switched to EDGE because the 3G/HSPA is kind of weak. (3 bars)

EDGE in Cape Town is about 550ms on EDGE with MTN. Occassional lag spike but nothing huge. maybe a couple of hundred ms. Last night on edge I was getting 1.5k ms but thats probably because the tower is over used *shrug*

I found a program written by someone here on MYBB that does it, it's called Mobile data monitoring Application. It works great and I've found that my connection does seem to be faster when I use it. :D

Ok, I found the link if you're interested. http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showpost.php?p=756106&postcount=1

But I also got thinking that it might be this causing the lag, but you use windows to make the dial-up connection on it, so there shouldn't be a problem. I'll test it anyway lol

I tried MTN EDGE, and my latency was 3400ms straight of the bat. I couldn't even log out o_O
Vodacom HSDPA was between 900ms and 1300ms.

Any other ideas. I'm thinking maybe my add-on. I'll try them tonight. :(

Then i have no idea. Have you tried creating a manual connection setup on windows?
