Laudium residents have been without water for three days, according to community representatives. The taps ran dry on Wednesday night, following low pressure in the area.

Activist Yusuf Abramjee took to social media to highlight the situation in the Pretoria community. He told News24 that around 20 000 people are currently affected in Laudium and surrounding areas such as Atteridgeville, Claudius and Itireleng.

"There is not one drop of water in the taps," he added.

Schools were forced to close on Friday due to the lack of water, Abramjee says.

According to ward councillor Farouk Essop, there has been no communication from the municipality to warn residents that the water would be cut off. He says he was informed that the water shortage was due to restrictions by Rand Water, but that the water utility has instead shifted the blame.

Rand water did say there were areas it was going to restrict water to as they weren't dropping their usage sufficiently

Water crisis: residents take to the streets in protest as Laudium reservoir drops to 4%

Tensions are simmering in Laudium, southwest of Pretoria, after the level of its reservoir dropped to just 4% and residents were urged to “tighten up” efforts to conserve water.

“It is clear that the water demand is extremely high because of the high temperatures currently being experienced and the reservoirs cannot keep up with the demand,” said a statement by City of Tshwane MMC for utility services Abel Tau on Thursday.

Tau said the city had isolated the reservoir’s outgoing supply and added that it would be opened as soon as it had recovered.

Disgruntled Laudium residents took to the streets to voice their frustrations on Thursday afternoon, blocking the entrance into Laudium along the R55.

“We are really fed up. Enough is enough. The Laudium reservoir is empty and I’m not told why.

“Laudium has been repeatedly targeted. We were without water for over four days, two weeks ago. Anger is running high,” ward councillor Farouk Essop said.

Community activist Yusuf Abramjee said some residents had suggested an urgent high court interdict against the council.

The water cutoffs have now spread to other parts of Pretoria now. I am in Pretoria East and there has been no water since yesterday midday.

Messages sent on community Whatsapp group mentioned Klapperkop and one other reservoir has critically low levels of water so they shut off the water to give the resevoirs a chance to fill up.

No advance warning though and no tankers etc to deliver water to the affected areas.

first it was electricity, now its the water

Seems to me like the current reservoirs can't meet demand.
Wonder if this was sudden (i.e. new developments tapping in; failure in planning), something broke or it's been a while in the making.

The guys on the other side of Cedar had no water for 9 days not too long ago. They weren't impressed.

No protests though.
