Good day,

Guys

Just to let you know our PCI express and 7.2 cards are in type approval at the moment. Can’t advise on timing yet since the 7.2 cards are going to follow network rollout.

Cheers MTNDD

Can I PM you my address so you can send me samples for review purposes? :)

I won't waste my time on that. The network can hardly supply us with 1.8mb/s for our current HSDPA devices. How are they going to supply us with 7.2mb/s?

My understanding of it is as follows: 1.8Mbps HSDPA is a theoretical maximum, only obtainable under ideal conditions. Depending on signal conditions and the number of users connected to a particular tower you might in practice only get 600kbps - 1.2Mbps.

So, if the theoretical maximum is increased to 7.2Mbps, I would expect speeds of 2.4Mbps - 4.8Mbps, definitely something to look forward to. :D

Well, if you look at it that way, then I suppose I would test it as well.:D ;)

i agree with Piesang, they haven't even done a proper job on 1.8mbps (yet) :( they should first try and give a realistically practically achievable 1200-1600 kbps service, before moving on the new techs, which is only gonna cost everybody more munny to upgrade to.
I have serious doubts over whether 1.8Mbps is even possible, even under perfect conditions (which none of us come close to).... has anybody even been able to achieve more than 1600kbps - consistent
I have been almost right next to a tower with (obvious) full signal, at some unholy hours, so surely very few other users, and most (max burst) speeds attained have been just over 1200kbps, so doubt if the system is reeeeely even capable of 1.8mbps....
3G has matured enough to get consistent 384 max, so please MTN before spending munny on new techs, first give us true 1.8mbps service, 600kbps ave is not good enough :) how many other industries can be happy with 30% efficiency?

Max I get on my Huawei Data Card is about 800kb/s.

yeah, I'm about 2kms from closest tower, even 'upgraded' from E620 to E220 for better reception and speed, and my speeds at any time are 15(!) to +-750 max- not consistent, even with 75% to full signal, with E620 even less (in 'full HSDPA covered' area), so if I can just get 50% efficiency consistent from the 1.8mbps service I wud be a happy camper :D
Hopefully the upgrade to 3.6Mbps will help... will this network upgrade affect all the current '1.8mbps hsdpa' towers, or will it be a different network altogether

A major plus is having a data card that will not be redundant in the near future. Remember, other countries are already rolling out 7.2 so if you travel you can make use of it.

I've hear if you buy a PCI-express card, you can use an adaptor to make it work on your current laptop.

Also bear in mind that WiMax is coming soon - and that equipment isn't compatible with any of this. Spend wisely.

I bought one of these BandRich HSDPA card online at http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=144554 for about R2,700

It's an Express Card that comes with a USB adapter, so I'm all set for when I upgrade my notebook, and I can still use it on my desktop.

It works just great - speed of around 1.4 Mbps in PE now that MTN have sorted out their recent problems.

It shows connected at 7.2 Mbps, but that made no difference a week ago when MTN was at a snails pace.

I wonder if these speed increases will make any difference to latency?
Anyone know?

the fastest i've EVER downloaded with a E620 before i sold it - has been on the Football worldcup final...

I had about 2 bars with an external antenna in pretoria

I was downloading at 190kbps that's 1.5mbps
Bought a E220 6 months after that one because i bought a mac - i generally have better signal with the E220, and i travel all over the country.... but the speed has never been higher or even that high EVER again

I'm curious about this latency. So if you click on a link and it waits 1 second to respond and then gives you the page in 5 seconds, is the speed 5+1 or just 5?

I'm also cancelling my Hellkom line.

I have made arrangements with my security company , Atlas, to install a new radio TX/RX for only R570 for my alarm system and then the Helkom line goes.

Seeing that my Nokia N95 support HSDPA speeds of up to 3.6mb/s, will it be able to utilize these speeds from MTN when it is available?

I'm no expert on these matters, but just to let you know my data card connected in PE showing HSDPA and connected at 7.2 Mbps with the best download speed being 1.4 Mbps.
I know this doesn't answer your question but just thought it may be of interest.
