LCD or Projector for bar?

Hey guys,

I am almost done building my bar.

I have a question, should I go with an LCD in there or could I use a projector?

I don't have much experience with projectors... What would the quality be like? Can I watch sport fed from DSTV on a projector? Does the room need to be dimly lit for it to be seen properly?

Thanks guys.

You can use a projector, but do be aware of the limitations of a projector unless you're prepared to spend LOTS of money.

They need dimly lit rooms (usually)
The bulbs burn out after 2000 - 3000 hours (iirc) and usually cost like R3k to replace.
Do you want/need 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio?

I'm about to do the same - except I have the LCD, going to put a screen in the roof that pulls down above the LCD - bigger is better :)

You get some decent quality projects, but they cost, I recon you could get an ok one for about R10,000.

DSTV decoders have composite out, so get a splitter, and run the cables to the projector...

While on the topic, where do you buy bars?

If you're only going to be watching stuff on dstv, then i would get the biggest hd ready tv you can find. You can pick up a 42" hd ready tv for much cheaper than a 42" full hd tv. And besides, dstv will only output at hd ready (720p) resolution, so you would need a blu ray player or an xbox/ps3 to see anything at full hd resolution.

also same dilema

thinking about a chinese projector for under 5k with cheap bulbs - again the issue of the darkish room comes into play - so its either that or a 50" lcd - either way it will be one of the two for xmas:D

xbox btw isnt full hd

For sports - nothing beats a three meter screen :)

Thats why I want both - still planning on how to darken the room...

What about picture quality? LCD vs. Projector.

If 10k gets you a decent projector, that's pretty much the same as a decent LCD?

I've got a carpenter working for me from Jordan. Can build anything you can dream of out of wood. If you want, I can send him down to you. Give him a place to sleep in the garage or something and you're set. He's cheap too. I'm paying him 3k to build my entire bar...

10K gets you an acceptable projector... a decent projector starts at about R20k and ramps up VERY qucikly from there.

oh, ok, i watch movies in blu-ray anyhow - though blu ray hurts my eyes - to sharp:(

but a hd projector from China for under 5k no good? they have like 6000 hrs lamp life and then i can hook up the dstv and xbox on that - why go for a 20k thingy?

i dunno what that means, the chinese site says its hd, so what are they fibbing?
anyhow i dont like projectors, you cant see a thing during the day

what i dont get is why do lcds cost more than say a lcd tv - i dont get that? i dont need a tuner, but a large lcd screen costs more than your average lcd hd say sinotec tv from makro?

What that means is the projector can accept HD signals, but it downscales them to the 640x480 resolution it displays in, thereby not making it natively HD.

Does that sound like HD? Just asking. Do not believe what everyone say to promote sales, especially the Chinese!

Think HD "ready" LCD TV 1366*768?

Now they say "upscaling"? would like to see that myself. I see there are a comment about computer resolutions? so does that mean you need to conect a HD PVR to a PC first to upscale it?
I also see no mention of HDMI input or maybe HDCP?

Nope does not at all strike me as an real HD device m8t.

Good price anyway By the time it lands you can expect to have paid close to R5000.00, Still better than nothing, but look local first.
