Legal experts warn that Truecaller is probably breaking South Africa’s privacy laws

I literally have a copy of their contract in front of me. Fed all of the small fine print through AI. There are some significant warnings to signing it, to the effect that, your data is leaving the country and you absolve MIE of all responsibility.

My broadband really should do an investigation on this.
Oh no question they have that in their contract.. Good luck them trying to enforce that element of it.

I see call recording is back with Truecaller as well. And it records conversations both ends of the line. Only stupid thing is that when you start recording, it plays a song on the other end of the line to the person you are talking to while the app gets recording ready.

I still cannot fathom why Google took call recording away in SA. So stupid and moronic. The RICA Act clearly states that any person may record any conversation, without obtaining permission or notifying any person, if they are party to the conversation. Why Google thought anything else, I just don't know.

It seems to me that Google does not have any legal representatives in SA. Seems they just took it away from across the globe, making Android one of the most useless operating systems today.

I tried that, got more spam. The idiots that spam you are not the people who care about the list, so they subscribe to get a list, and then happily go about their business.

You cannot get the list anymore, as with e.g dmasa's national opt out register the provider must upload their database and is then given a list if hits, that they are then required to remove from their database or mark accordingly unless they have an excplcit opt-in from the contact.

WASPA can do more to explain how their process work. Should be about the same to the above

I've tried everything and the only thing that seems to work, is to forward their calls to the 0800 11 12 13 number for the police. Apparently the police don't like being bothered, so just a few threats from the police and my spam is already reduced.

How do you forward it? Call forwarding or even answering the call and then forwarding the call will in both instances initiate a new call from your number, the only number the emergency response centre will see.

Sure Truecaller is somehow selling your information as well, had increased spam after installing it.

So no one else had your number and subscribing to them introduced your number to the pool?

I like Truecaller. Makes my existence more peaceful.

I check my phone sitting next to me and say "oh look at all the phuckwits that tried to spam me today".

Personally, I wouldn't allow TrueCaller anywhere near any device I own. Not prepared to share my contacts with a service in the business of harvesting other people's contacts. Also, I have no real and immediate control over white and black lists.
Still, those who find it useful and don't mind the downsides should be free to use it as they please. Don't want government involved.

When I installed True caller, it asked if I want to share my contacts. I chose no. So as long as my choice is honored, who knows if they do, it is fine with me.

I did the same thing.

They have issues with Truecaller not complying with the POPIA act, but it's the only thing protecting me from interacting with companies who don't comply with POPIA phoning me.
Yeah but now they phone everyone on your contact list. Ag nee Maryke, hoekom moet jy so wees.

Phone By Google works for me. And it comes up with Business names automatically if they are listed on Google. Once in a blue moon a spam call does sneak through, but that is because it has not been reported. I end the call as soon as I hear "We would like to do a consumer survey", report the number as spam on Phone By Google and block it. Done.

Truecaller warning in South Africa

Truecaller says it does not want to speculate on the personal opinions of specialist regulatory lawyers who say that it was likely violating South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (Popia).

“Every individual has an inherent fundamental right to know who is calling them, and we enable our users to exercise it,” a Truecaller spokesperson told MyBroadband.
Yeah well what about the person these constant rubbish spam callers keeps calling what about their rights and privacy???? They are violating our rights not Truecaller ... These spam caller companies should be taken to court for invasion of privacy. They buy info not freely given to them and hassle people constantly sometimes even 5 times a day! Truecaller is NEEDED!

Thb, I never saw the need to share my contacts with them anyway. The ID I get is not what I have. It doesn't always block calls I have blocked so not exactly the best. The can do without using your contacts unless you store spam numbers in there, so they just need to stop that.

How do I get protected from : hello, this is an important consumer announcement. I don't want these calls!!!! Just leave trucaller alone and concentrate on unemployment, corruption and poverty!!!

IMHO, Trucaller is the only thing enforcing POPIA by blocking the 6+ spam calls a day from POPIA offenders that are not held accountable in any way .

The only problem for the business community is that they were used to cold calling customers even during the night and lawyer is used as scapegoat as those that owe businesses simple block their calls and some businesses show as Spam calls and customers easily avoid their calls

I have a simple solution to the spam call problem. Just make it legal to use hate speech against anyone who cold calls you.
