Internet cable repair ship sets sail

Orange's Marine's Léon Thévenin ship has departed South Africa and is on its way to the area where four undersea cables broke last week, causing widespread Internet outages and slowdowns in South Africa and several other African countries.

The ship was loaded up with fibre optic cable in Cape Town harbour before setting off to the coastal waters of Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire on Tuesday evening.

Must cost a fortune to repair.
yes but a bigger fortune if its NOT repaired,
shows you how vulnerable we are to something going down and not automatically rerouting so quickly you don't even realize its down.

I actually think its quite easy to cut these cables or sabotage the landing stations and take out a country communication.

I'm pretty curious at the cost of undersea cable vs having a cable run on-land instead  repairs would be much cheaper I'd assume

Just a few EMP grenades or devices on those stations will knock out all comms equipment, since they are not hardened. A co-ordinated strike on all landing stations can cripple an entire countrys high-speed internet. Mobile networks also use fibre as a backend for the comms, so most likely they will be knocked out as well...
We don't need those landing stations or underseas cables. We all have DSTv.

said it before and I'll say it again, House of cards we have built with everything cloud based.
and thats what worries me, right now its still not life threatening, right now we are able to survive (although inconvenienced) should the internet go down.

what happens went we eventually get Smart this and smart that and robo taxis and drones and all that jazz,
and the internet fails and doesn't keep operating despite losing a cable or 4. will we be at stone age, or will people actually be killed?

thats the part that really worries we like were marching towards a cliff without any sort of backup system that CAN take over and isnt reliant on pipes under the seas.

My Strategist and Disposal Expert actually planned and did a mock storming and disabling of all landing stations ...it was ridiculously easy if you have the equipment and manpower. We are far too complacent here in ZA. The security at those sites are not even properly trained or equipped for a combat scenario.
you telling me, some dude could just waltz up to the landing station and blow it up like a CIT van?

There's always the failsafes that use satellite internet for critical infrastructure, but the majority of things will stop working after a few days yes. Banks have their own dedicated satellite fallbacks, government does not however. Private hospitals also won't be affected since they have satellite comms as a last resort backup. Everything public will be FUBAR after a few weeks though. you can expect mass lootings and riots/criminal activity after dark, according to our prediction scenarios.
so deaf, dumb, blind and looted and destroyed,
well I was Man down during the last Riots, so this time I will try loot a TV! wonder how do I fit that on a Getz?
