Let's say I wanted to buy a car from an auction....

I am looking at the websank auctions lately...

Anyways, it's just a thought I have for now, would like to buy something relatively cheap, and would most likely go have a look at it beforehand... But what else is there to know besides the added 15% tax on the bid and the handling fees?

Would I need to roadworthy it and get it licensed myself?

you need to know that if someone couldn't afford their car premium chances are they couldn't afford services either.

Skimping on maintenance is a quick way to kill any car

Fair point, I am looking at cars that are not very old so they could only have done so much damage...

Vehicle's not guaranteed, any fines, licenses etc on them you'll be liable for
Generally a fat deposit beforehand as well (a la cash, not IOU) to be able to bid

I think it's looking for trouble. On the other hand, I would be grateful if you could do it and document the entire process on here.

Anyone here actually have first hand experience? Why is everyone so negative about it? A mate of mine has bought loads of cars from auctions, and had minimal issues... He runs 3 of them and has done so for years.

Okay so this is how it goes.

You put down a payment of about R5000 to be able to take part in an auction. It’s fully refundable if you don’t bid on a car. If you’re the highest bidder of a vehicle, say for R100 000, you can decide of whether you want to keep the R5000 or if it goes towards the payment of the car. You can decide to do cash or finance. They can also do licence and registration and all that for you at a fee, or you can take that all on. A roadworthy test however is something you’ll need to pass if you’re to be given a licence disk (assuming the car’s disk has already expired).

This is all first hand experience. Bought a car from an auction in August 2018. She’s still with me today :)

Thank you. I have bought a car from auction before, but it was 10 years ago now, and the old memory isn't great these days.

swimming with real sharks honestly,
never know what your buying, and how the car was used/abused.

motor trade likes it, becuse after a nice amount of work fixing up a car,
tidy profit awaits.

get a second maybe even 3rd opinion on a car,

I can’t find any evidence in the T&Cs that say I’m liable for the fines like you had said, hence why I was asking if this was first hand experience.

Firsthand warnings, havent had a fine to test
You could likely transfer the fines but initially they can block license disk renewal. This I had when buying a car from a less reputable dealer
