I got a new LG DVD Drive for my G5. Only problem now is that the drive can only burn to CD. When I try burn the disc as as DVD through Disk Utility the only option it gives me is to burn as cd, not DVD.

Is there something I need to change. I had a LG drive in before and this allowed me to burn as CD and DVD through Disk Utility

Just a few questions:
(1) What OS?
(2) Burn as DVD? What does this mean?:
(a) Author as UDF
(b) Burn a DVD in the drive
(3) What media (DVD+ or - / Speed)?

Download Liquid CD (1.3 if you are not on Leopard or 2 if you are) and see what it lets you author.

That's quite surprising. So it's definitely a DVD Writer? Just checking that it's not a combo drive.
What does it say in System Profiler under "Disc Burning"? To get to System Profiler, click the Apple Menu -> About This Mac -> More Info

LG Drive

It is not a combo drive. The LG drive can burn to CD and DVD, even Dual Layer DVD (as per the packagaing).

I will try Liquid CD, and see if that works. The DVD's are DVD+R

Does that make a difference?

Should I rather be using DVD-R?

It is highly unlikely that Patchburn is an option. That's pre-tiger, hence my (unanswered) question about operating system version. The speed of the DVDs make a difference. For eg, some DVD writers can do -R @ 16X while others can do only at 8X. +R is generally more likeyl to be supported at higher speeds. If this is a brand new drive, it may be worth your while to consider it may be the problem. Are you able to author DVDs with it in another machine?

The drive is definitely a DVD writer, and not just a DVD reader. It is the LG GH22NP20. I will try Liquid CD on the machine and see if it can burn to DVD. The OS is 10.4.11, so will use Liquid CD 1.3. I think te discs were 8x. But LG drive can burn up to 16x for +/-R.

It is happening on 2 x G5's, both with the same type of LG drive. So it must be something with the G5's not the Drive. If all else fails, will replaces the drives with new ones and see if that corrects it.

The LG drive may well be able to burn 16xDVD+ but the software (OS, burn utils) and hardware (PPC in some instances doesn't do -R above 8x I have discovered) may only be happy with 8x. But that should not matter. If the discs are 8x then they should author just fine (at 8x, not 16) I still do not know what you mean when you say you cannot burn as DVD though. What do you mean by this? Do you mean:

(a) When you insert a DVD it is not recognised >>> if so, what have you told Sys Prefs to do?
(b) You cannot burn UDF (the format for Video DVDs)?
(c) Something else?

Here are the details on the LG Drive.

When I insert a black DVD, it comes up on the Desktop as a Untitled CD, not DVD

When I use Liquid DVD, it says inert blank disc. I insert the black dvd, and then it just sits on waiting for device, and doesnt get anywhere. You guys have any ideas?

What do you mean have I told system pref what to do> where do you go in system pref to change the disk burning properties?

Whops, I know what you mean now, In the system pref I have chosen to open the DVD in the finder. But it does not com up as Untitled DVD, only as Untitled. Is this an LG issue, or Mac OS issue? Is there a firmware update that I nedd for the DVD writer?

Aha - blank media mounted by the Finder comes up Untitled, without identifying the type of media (DVD / CD). Use Liquid CD - you won't be sorry. Nothing wrong with the drive or OS.

LG Drive

I tried using Liquid CD, but when I inserted the disc, it kep saying waiting for drive. I tried another disc and it did the same thing?

Why is it coming up as Untitled CD, even though the disc is a blank DVD?

So say you tried two diff disks, were they the same colour?, I know the DVD laser's sometimes struggle's with certain colours. Try a diff brand/colour. I've got a external Panasonic DVD writer connected via Firewire, it even struggles with certain colours.

I have tried different discs. Still no Luck. I have an HD with Tiger installed and an HD with Leopard installed. With leopard the Blank DVD comes up as an Untitled DVD. But when I try burn a disc it says it need e.g 2444MB to burn, and then you cannot burn the DVD. IF I use Liquid CD on leopard it picks up the blank disc, but when I try burn is also says it need a certain amount of space even though the data I have chosen to burn is less than 4GB.

With the Tiger install it comes up as Untitled CD when I insert a DVD, I tried Patchburn for Tiger, but that does still not resolve it.

Eventually I installed Toast, and that seemed to solve the problem. But is there any way to get it to burn natively on Tiger and Leopard?

Not related - but we found that one CD-burner could not handle a particular brand of CD's/DVD's.

Switched to another brand, and it burned merrily :D
