You should rather look at ones with hard drives. They are a lot more usefull.

cant really read the small print details but it looks to be basic entry level stuff. I just bought the LG RH7823W for R2700 and im happy with it.

I have a Tivo, and just have to say that unless you specifically want to keep archived stuff on DVD, the PVR style box is farrrrr better IMO. Instant access, no disks, fast, pause/rewind live tv, etc.

I would also say hdd is necessary. But if it is not for you then LG is not a bad make in this field.

looks like the one being sold by Game is the predecessor to the one I recently bought (DR-165). It's basically a replacement for a VCR; you should be able to get about 4 hours of decent quality recording on a DVD+RW disc.

Some nice features (like the title screen that shows you an icon for each programme recorded).

The HDD recorder is better but I didn't think the extra R1500 was worth it just for a hard disk.

Time shifted video is the best thing since sliced bread and it can only be done with a hdd. I would never go back to just plain recorder again. In my opinion you should pay the extra cash for the hdd.

in case you're looking for comments on the HDD recorder (i.e. RH-7624), here is a thread about it

Thanks for all the comments.

I am basically looking to replace my VCR. Although a HDD recorder will be better, I'll wait for prices to drop.

@Hillbilly Are you happy with yours? It's on sale here Also has a 24month guarantee and not 12 as Game's

It was bought locally

I paid around R50-R90 for shipping.
My total cost was R1100 for Tivo and shipping, and I got my own HDD for R450.

hi prox..

am happy with it though first choice for me would've been HDD but my bank balance didn't agree :)

my grand plan is to pass this on to parents and then buy HDD when they're more affordable.

the only 'irritation', especially if you do a lot of timer recording, is that you need to remember to delete programmes from the disk that you've already watched. it only 'timer records' from after the last recording to the end of the disc.

or you could just buy a few DVD+RW discs and recycle.

Ed, is there any support for the TIVO in South Africa?
Not officially but the TivoZA site provides all the answers with regards to using a TiVo in South Africa, there is also a forum where you can post any TiVo related question :D

Once setup, the download of the guide data is fully automated so you can just enjoy watching the shows and not have to worry about anything else. To see how the TiVo compares to the PVR and MCE, see the "PVR questions" thread and the "Comparison Matrix" ;)

Philips TiVo - R1400
200Gb HDD - R700 (70-240H)
Network card - R550
Cabels - R50
Total :R2700
With the benefits of buying a unit locally comes the added costs, if you're happy to get a unit off eBay you can have a fully setup unit for under R1000 (for a full discussion on this see the "Total cost of importing a series 1 TiVo" thread).

Keep in mind the additional items you listed are optional, if importing a unit then a hard drive is usually included. The network card is optional and the TiVo's internal modem or the included serial cable (connects to your PC) can be used to retrieve guide data updates, how often the TiVo connects and how many days worth of guide data get downloaded are both configurable. The cables you listed are included with both the local units and most of the units available on eBay.
