The LG Q6 was revealed internationally last month, bringing the “FullVision” display to cheaper smartphones. At the time of the reveal, we got word that the phone would be hitting South Africa, with no price or release information shared.

Now, the South Korean company has announced that the phone would be coming to the country on 1 September.

The Q6 packs a capable but lower mid-range Snapdragon 435 processor, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage. The phone also packs the aforementioned 5.5-inch 2160×1080 display, stretching much further than most budget screens, as well as a 3000mAh battery.

Don’t expect a fingerprint scanner though, as LG has merely opted for PIN or facial unlocking.

LG’s Stan Lee told Gearburn that the phone would have contract pricing of R379 a month on Vodacom, and would have prepaid pricing of between R6000 and R6500.

The LG Q6 comes in at quite a steep price, but you’re getting a few perks in the process

It makes for quite a premium over similarly equipped smartphones, such as the R2799 Xiaomi Redmi 4X (which packs a fingerprint scanner and 4100mAh battery as well) and the sub-R4000 Nokia 6 (using an older SD430 but also packing a fingerprint scanner).

LG is however sweetening the deal by throwing in an LG Watch Style, valued at R3499, regardless of whether you opt for a contract or prepaid purchase. Lee explained that LG doesn’t have a plan to launch the watch as a separate purchase for now. So those wanting LG’s new wearable will need to get the phone as well. Additionally, those who purchase the Q6 will also receive R1000 cash back.

What about a sequel to the LG XCam series though? After all, slapping a dual-camera system (particularly the wide-angle camera) on a budget phone is a great way to stand out.

“Instead of continuing XCam series or any other series, we decided to create a different product category, which is Q series. So there will be no (next version of the) XCam,” Lee answered.

You'll make a great MyBB staff writer.

It's actually sad that a big tech publication like MyBB doesn't take the initiative to find out when certain devices are launching and at what price. Luckily we have these small SA tech publications

I got the phone from Vodacom for my wife but it's currently laying in the cupboard, since there are no screen protectors or cases available anywhere.

It has gorilla glass 3, the case is going to be hard to find if no one stocks it locally

At first glance, there is a lot to like about the Q6. The design, largely carried over from the G6, looks great and feels absolutely perfect in hand. The display is also very good and looks like it goes almost edge to edge on every side. Simply having this aspect ratio with those curved corners in this price range itself is very unique. And the software too, for most parts, works quite well.

Yet there is no avoiding the downsides of the cost cutting, which you spot throughout the phone and which goes against the very premium and upmarket first impression you get from the device. The cheap plastic back scratches very easily, the phone lacks basic necessities like a fingerprint sensor and fast charging.

The camera is quite decent in daylight and we can live without dual cameras or 4K video recording in this price range. The software feels like it was robbed of a few features, either because the hardware was just not good enough or for the sake of differentiation.

But what really damages the whole experience for us was the poor performance from the utterly lackluster processor. We could have excused the lack of features to some extent if it didn't perform so poorly but the combination of two makes it hard for the Q6 to stand-up to its competition.

Coming in at about the same price as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 or the Moto G5 Plus, the Q6 really can't compete with either of these devices in terms of performance, features and overall value for money. To us, the appeal of an overall package is far greater than just having a pretty exterior and that's exactly where the Q6 fails to deliver.

In the end, the Q6 is beauty that is skin deep, which is a shame because we really wanted it to be good. If LG were to make a version with more power under the hood, we would love to give it another shot.

On the same contract package vodacom also has the P9 for R329pm and the P10 lite for R299pm

R329pm is for the normal P9 and not the P9 lite

Maybe you can ask vodacom to add on a Huawei smart watch to the contract
