LG RH399H - Compatible Flash Drives

I recently got the LG RH399H DVD Recorder. It has a USB port that supports USB 1.1 and allows you to play/copy media from a Flash Drive.

However, I have found that not all flash drives work on it. My Transcend JetFlash V60 (8Gb) does not work on it. The wife's Transcend JetFlash V30 (1Gb) works perfectly.

Does anyone know how to make a flash drive work with the DVD recorder? I have formatted the flash drive with FAT32. It supports USB 1.1 & 2.0.

Have anyone ever tried to connect an external hard drive to the DVD recorder?

Maybe the capacity is the issue.

I have the standard LG DVD player with the USB port and my V60 16GB works fine.

How old is the unit?

Two weeks. The manual do state some flash drives don't work, but gives no reason why except for the FAT16/32 supported only issue. I'll reformat the drive again and give it one more bash

USB 1 has a transfer rate of 12MB/s - you might find steaming DVDs problematic. AVI's should be fine though.

On a site note I"ve had problems booting machines off USB sticks - some sticks just don't work. I guess they're not all the same.

Looks like the Transcend ones can be problematic.I 've got a Denon DN-HS5500 media player and my V30(8gb) don't work, but every cheap one i try worked.

Same here. I have LG RH399H model and I've had the dvd drive replaced twice already. It lasts maybe six months, and the number of times I'd used the drive during the time might have been around 20-40 times. It has now given up the ghost a 3rd time and I'm fedup. It just pops the disc out again and says "unknown disc".

Won't buy any LG drives again.

Ditto on the drive failures - on my 5th optical unit in 4 years! The HDD also just died...

Got me a Samsung recorder and it's great.

So I went to rent a dvd from the video shop and forgot my LG doesn't read commercial dvd's anymore (for the 3rd time...). Luckily it stil reads DVD-RW so a quick rip and rewrite onto a DVD-RW and it's movie time :)

Mine has been fine for 16 months now but its a really sucky player/recorder. Many title from USB does not fill the screen in wide screen mode but once you copied them to the HDD they fill the entire screen. There are a few other annoyances also - hardware wise it has never let me down.

Maybe it's the file format? Ie the player only recognises either FAT32 or NTFS?

Yup - only FAT and FAT32. And forget about drives pulling power from the USB port.
