Cheapest ways to renew car licence discs in South Africa

South African motorists looking to renew their licence discs now have several service providers that charge less than R200 for renewal and delivery straight to their doors.

South Africa's road laws determine that vehicle licence discs are only valid for one year before they have to be renewed.

The cheapest was always standing in the post office queue and it was never more than 15 min wait and none of the inconvenience about waiting for a delivery. Pity they stopped making the renewal notice available to download on the website and also do not e-mail it (they didn't mail it to me this year like last year).

Plus the post offices closing down

Yep. The one just up the road from me was always a pleasure to use, but they closed it down this year. One of the few government places where I didn't have any reservations visiting because it was actually efficient. The one lady and the manager must've been there for over 20-years and were always helpful.

Yeah I used to use 2 post offices, both closed down this year, before COVID I used to use the one at Brightwater commons when it still existed, was always quick and efficient.

What is the easiest way to get a printout of a licence disk?

I have paid using CoCT using their service, they eventually confirmed that it is renewed, but I haven’t received it yet. This is now 7 weeks later…

Was the most expensive way for me because of the post office queue at my PO and the frequent downtime of eNatis meant finding another PO. My time is worth more than the R100 delivery for online renewal. Less hassle too.

Exactly. I pay the eNatis delivery fee with a smile.

I am never sure why we are still so analog when it comes to vehicles with paper licenses and even dumb number plates. We should switch to RFID tags and similar technology.

Imagine you can renew online and then it automatically apply to your profile. No sticking paper to glass like a neanderthal. No need to pull cars over to verify license disks- just use wireless. Of course this should have the proper cryptographic signatures (including issuer etc so that bribery can be detected). Of course this will help with stolen cars...

Of course licenses are seen as just a revenue source so probably nobody cares - selling an A4 paper for a couple hundred bucks is good business.

Is the R72 service fee not what you would pay at the licensing department anyway? So you are only paying extra for delivery? Doing multiple licenses at the same time helps that you only pay for 1 delivery fee.
Yep. The R72 is mandatory across any payment means so you are just paying delivery.
