Licence renewals can be blocked due to unpaid e-tolls - Report

In a notice issued to South African motorists via its website, the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) states that new licence discs can be withheld from drivers until their e-toll bill is settled.

The agency confirmed this warning appeared on the company's website in a statement to the City Press, although it did not state whether licence discs were already being withheld.

So much tax just to drive a car in banana republic.

Tax on purchase
Tax on petrol
Disc-Tax for the car each year
Drivers-Card-Tax for the driver every 5 years

(and not like the last two improves anything in anyway it actually should, not forgetting about the first two)

I guess we just won't renew our license disc's either then
I'm on this page as well, though just remember that your insurance policy, if you have one, probably has a clause about your vehicle being properly licensed in order to pay out any claims. Which shows the stupidity of this legislation in its lack of consideration for knock-on effects. I might as well also stop paying car insurance as well.

City of Cape Town has been threatening to send me a summons for 2 years now for doing 66km/hr down Edinburgh Drive, a fairly steep downhill section. Tut tut

Nevertheless, I renewed both cars licences (both due 28/02) without any hitch

Friend has (deliberately) CA70786 in front and CA70768 at the back. If challenged, he will blame it on the dealer, but in 3 years it hasn't happened yet

Licence plate shops are supposed to ask to see the registration document. However, they will make "signs" with any letters you want

Is it stupid or brilliant? Legislation without consequences is stupid ... case in point, eTolls up to now.
