It is interesting to note that it was the Department of Communication’s (DoC) intention to license a Third National Operator by 2005
...and now Ivy wonders if she is doing a good job

Should organise a group of MYADSL members to attend the handing over of the license at the convention centre, wanting to sign up with the SNO ASAP. Who knows, might even get discounted rates for being the first 100 etc lol!

When looking back one can start to appreciate the tremendous injustice this department has done to the South African telecommunications landscape.

HEAR HEAR !!!!
And they're allowed to carry on with their stupid slow retarded crippling ways by a president who is blind.

ICASA have managed to pull off a feat that many broadband users did not think would happen before the end of 2005 – issuing the SNO with a license.

December is the end of 2005.. not much gets done this time of year. No mention of LLU, self provisioning, sat cables etc.. i think they will be using telkom infrastructure.. so now we have, no wait we will immenently have a SNO who's name is still unknown quite a few yrs late. I wonder if they have an agreement with Telkom or SNO as to when more telecoms companies can come in. Gov being an investor I suspect they might have then again they will say .. 'only if the market can handle it' ;)

stoke : There is no reason to insult the President

Hmmmm, defending the prez.

Is it not his appointed lackey's that are messing up this country?
Is it not his lackey's that seem to be embroiled in scandals on a weekly basis?

stoke : The president has done so many things that I admire. The MoC is not one of them however. :-)

But I dont the appointment of Ivy outweighs all the many great things he has done. And it certainly isn't enough to insult the President

mccrack : It is also his brilliance that has led to our economic situation (With the help of Trevor. Whom he appointed). Many of his 'lackey's' have done great jobs. Some have not. Thus is life

As for the scandals. That again, is part of life. And he has reacted well to those

When looking back one can start to appreciate the tremendous injustice this department has done to the South African telecommunications landscape.

COMPLETELY TRUE! What can we do about it though? Isn't there a statement we can release or some entity we can complain to (letters to the president?!) get the MoC "retrenched" for doing this to the sector? What about a media campaign or something.

Local loop unbundling, self provisioning and a truly open telecoms market is the only real solution.

Unfortunately it seems that this solution, highlighted over and over again by all objective analysts, seems to evade our minister and her department.

Yep, unfortunately this HAS been/and IS highlighted OVER and OVER again (even by the DoC themselves) but have yet see them actually DO something about it. With shares in both the FNO and SNO, their current track record seems to be very biased in favour of the operator.

Jstrike, and such is life that he gets comments from people like stoke that he deserves.

Maybe he will learn from such comments

What about his promise in Feb 2005 of cheaper broadband? Bah.

While progress is great, and I want to be enthusiastic, I'll only be when the bill I get ever month is 40% of what it is now, and I can make my friends in the UK jealous with MY connection speeds . . .

doobiwan : Whilest prices will come down, they will never make your friends in the UK jealous
