ok great, my line got upgraded today to 4mbps (after a week) but i'm still only seeing my downloads reach a maximum +- 512kbps (thats bits). so what could it be? is it that telkom is still capping my line at 512 or is it my isp? i'm with AYCE BTW.

It could be your ISP limiting you.. Specially if its a Uncapped one (they are limited to 512K at around R1350 +-, and 1mbit uncapped is R2700 +-) So yeah obviously speed limited..

But mostly the average accounts are only capped.. Not speed limited.. U only reach your cap much much quicker

You must disconnect and then reconnect your pppoe session with your isp for the speed to increase to the new sync speed. Check you line afterwards to see if you have 4meg by using the telkom speed test. (http://www.telkom.co.za/attheoffice/products/dsl/speed1.html)

Its possible that they are still limiting your speed, even tho your synching at 4092, there is a testing period to check whether or not your line holds the synch... this isnt howeva the case with some people....

The speed test is weird. I have noticed that about 7 out of 10 times it will give me a speed of 4megs and the other 3 out of 10 times it will give me a speed of 2 - 3 megs.

You can get full 4meg speed when downloading (even from international sites) if you use a download manager like download accelerator or getright and set it to use multiple connections (i use download accelerator with 10 connections to max my line speed). You will not likely get anywhere near 4meg speed to international sites if you use the standard Internet explorer downloader which only uses 1 connection.

so what you are saying is that uncapped 1024 static line would not get 4mb?
