Link across a Public Road

Good Morning

The company I work for has two buildings across the road from each other.
I want to put a link between the two buildings and was wondering what municipal and telecommunications laws I would have to consider since the link would have to be across a public road. The cost of a laser link appears to be too high, are there any other cost effective options that I should be considering?

Thanks
Melissa

Hmmmm,

According to most peeps the answer is no, you cannot. (cabling)

However CaptainWifi has been advocating that you can through his dealings with the Pretoria Muni i believe .... maybe PM him .....

How about wireless and just not telling anyone about it?

Boring an underground conduit is bound to be more expensive and probably frowned upon and without the proper authorisation your company could be held liable.

for R50 per day, you can hire a Mozambiquan to lift the wire every time a car comes past, and just lay a cable across the road.... :D

But, seriously, a wifi link should be ok, a couple of panels and a linksys router should do nicely (R3-4K maybe) - look around for a link to JAWUG.

ROFL.... I can just see it......
Just string cables from rooftops....[insert name here] says they will do it phone [insert number here] and see [insert 100 googled links here]...

lol @ Moederloos good out the box thinking... I remember seeing a single pair of copper wire that telkom ran across a road (no one to lift the cable... would dig to far intot Telkom's profits)

Welcome to the forum Melissa.

In all seriousness many companies run links similar to the link you have in mind. They mostly choose to ignore the idiotic laws.
As what has been mentioned wireless is probably your best option depending on your requirements.
I would suggest Routerboards for this link if i was to consult, bit more but better in the long run.

or http://www.jawug.za.net for loads of info on wireless

This is a DIY alternative, but I have one word for you: Ronja

From their about:
What is Ronja?

Ronja (Reasonable Optical Near Joint Access) is an User Controlled Technology (like Free Software) project of optical point-to-point data link. The device has 1.4km range and has stable 10Mbps full duplex data rate. Ronja is an optoelectronic device you can mount on your house and connect your PC, home or office network with other networks. Or you can use it as a general purpose wireless link for building any other networking project.

The design is released under the GNU Free Documentation License: you get all the necessary documentation and construction guides free. The material costs are very low, about 100 USD. The operation is immune to interference and quite reliable - interrupted only by dense fog.
This option just KILLS the cost aspect, and you can't argue with 10Mbps full duplex lovin' baby! :p Where (as in city) this for anyway?
