I would like to get my Linksys WRT54G4G Router to work with an MTN SIM and MTN Huwei E620 Data card.

If I plug the E620 in with MTN sim into router, it does not work. However, if I first plug in E620 with Vodacom SIM it works. I can then pull out E620, replace with MTN sim and it will work fine on MTN network until power reset.

This tells me that the device is network locked.

Does anyone have more definitive info on whether I can do the above without this NASTY workaround. I am ready to go buy a Vodacom SIM just so that I can utilise my MTN Data contract!!!

I want to get myself one of these routers for Christmas, so I'd like to be sure this combination works beforehand.

@wayne.m.smith:
Can you please let me know the firmware version of your router and of your datacard? Also, is your router Vodafone branded?

I have seen posts on other forums that seem to indicate firmware upgrades might be the solution.

Guys I've never tried one of these routers but I'll see if I can get my device manager on this and see he can get testing and provide feedback

This seems to be the latest version around, I'm do not know if Vodacom use a custom version of that firmware. It may be worth downloading the latest version of the firmware directly from the Linksys website: http://www.linksys.com/
Be sure to download the correct firmware. Check the label on your router and check whether you have a UK or an EU model and click on the change link in the upper left corner of their homepage and select the appropriate region.

This is definitely not the latest firmware, I have seen the following versions mentioned on various sites:

Version 11.16.09.09.01
https://netcom.no/privat/kundeservice/veiledninger/connect/supportumts/huaweie620.html

Version 11.16.09.09.11
http://www.linksysinfo.org/forums/showthread.php?t=48704

Versions 11.16.09.02.00
http://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?pid=33034#p33034

Whatever you do, do not install the firmware from Netcom, although it doesn't warn you anywhere, it is a network locked firmware and you'll be unable to use your card with your MTN SIM card again.

After a bit of searching I managed to find ver 2.00 Firmware. After the upgrade the router works with a MTN
I have a Huawei E620 Card
I think I found the firmware on the Linksys UK site.
