After many hours, I come here hoping someone can shed some light on whats going on.

I bought a Linksys WRT54GL router (Secondhand).

The guy handed it to me including a RJ45(Internet port) -----> Serial end connection ( I have nothing to plug this into)

I cannot login to the router via a web browser. The DHCP server is still handing out IP addresses.

I've tried the reset switch, but it seems it doesn't respond.

I can't tftp to the router to flash the firmware, however it does respond to ping.

On boot, the power led flashes, while thats happening the DMZ led stays a solid green. Then the power changes to solid green as well as WLAN. After about 20 seconds the DMZ led goes off.

I am not able to connect to the WLAN either. *edit* I can connect to the WLAN, however it doesn't change anything for me*

Another thing, the Network connections tab in windows shows Ethernet, then under it says "RedButton Internet"

I'm lost...

*update*

Managed to slave it to my router as the internet port(Linksys) wasn't routing dhcp through it.

This is what's on here.

The ISP was RedButton and it appears they have closed down.

What hardware version is it? The sticker on the bottom will tell you.

Usually you can get it into TFTP mode by removing power, holding down the reset button, and applying power without letting go of the reset.
Keep holding for about 20 seconds

It should come up on a default IP of 192.168.1.1

Try sending the new firmware via TFTP to it.

Otherwise, openwrt.org has some good tutorials on rescuing WRTs.

Does the serial connection look like it was put in by the seller? If so there's probably openwrt/ddwrt installed on it. There's quite a few recovery programs on those sites as the router is well known. Just re-flash in recovery mode.

Hardware v1.1

The reset button doesn't work. I've tried 30/30/30 however it keeps the same ip with the same subnet.

The serial connection is from RJ45 (connecting into the router) then I assume he attached it to a modem or something. The cable is removable.

The reset button doesn't work so I can't get into recovery mode.

It looks like it's running custom firmware shown in the picture attached in my other comment.

How would I simulate pressing the reset button? I have access to where it connects to the PCB
