Hi everyone,

A friend of mine bought me a Linksys WRT54GL Router as a present so I can get my wireless network up and running. The problem is that it only seems to have an ethernet input as apposed to the usual telephone line input. I hope this makes sense.

So my question is, does this mean that I will need to get an ADSL modem or something as well so that I can use this new router?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Yup,

You will need a seperate modem. You can plug in the modem using the internet wan port into the router.

The router can then "dial-up" / connect via the modem and then share the internet to everyone connected to the router.

Hope this makes some sense?

Try searching on the forum for answers as this issue has been raised a few times

I'm assuming you have an ADSL line / or are thinking of getting one?

Yeah, it's hopefully going to be installed in a month or so. That is if Telkom keeps their word. Not likely. :D

I have a WRT54G wireless router and use the Billion 5102S as modem. This setup works like a charm, and if like me, you forget to plug out your modem in electrical storms, it will work out cheaper to just replace the modem ;)

Thanks Nod!

Do you know where I can get my hands on one of those and how much it would cost?

Thanks again.

Cheaper in my experience is not always cheap. Rather buy something of average price. I bought my Billion from www.jump.co.za (was just the easiest as I could collect on my way home from work).

It pays to do research, google for make/model +reviews, and you should get a few hits. Some of the modems don't like the heat, and will act "funny" until rebooted. But in the end its up to jou.

Just stay away from the marconis. I have had so many problems with them.
