What distro were you trying to install or are you looking at. I personally have not seen that error message before. Also where are you downloading it from and are you downloading the full ISO.

First of, you need to understand what Linux is.
Linux is only the backbone, the meat, the actual operating system with all the fancy stuff, is Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, Slackware, etc.
Have a look at the following to see how they differ:
http://www.ubuntu.com/
http://www.archlinux.org/
http://fedoraproject.org/
http://www.pclinuxos.com/
etc.

What I would recommend is that you ask someone here pretty please to burn you a DVD of the latest Ubuntu release and get it to you. You probably downloaded the wrong ISO (wrong arch, wrong installation, etc.)

so where can i get a copy where every files is there.
That is impossible, the installation CD and DVD comes with a minimal working environment, if you are looking for a specific app you will need to download it via the software manager of your distribution. What we can give you is an installation medium that will give you a functional desktop, that is all.

Lets first see if there are some people in and around the Cape that can help you out, otherwise I'll send you a copy of the latest Ubuntu.

"10.1" is Suse's number convention, not sure of any others. But yeah, rather try Ubuntu or Linux Mint, or one of the others recommended here. To download a specific app, you would need to use the relevant distro's software/package manager.

That's all I can say based on the information available. I will be happy to send you a DVD of Ubuntu Ultimate Edition 2.8 (32-bit), based on 10.10 (Maverick), I installed it without any issues, certainly no "missing files". PM an address if interested.

Also visit Ubuntu Forums and Ultimate Edition's Site, for more information on Ubuntu Linux in general, and Ultimate Edition specifically.

You can burn your own distro in some shopping centres and at UCT for free.

Do you know which shopping centres? =D Just hijacked one of our test laptops at work and downloaded the latest Mint. Would be nice if there was somewhere else to go as well.

Canal walk has a toaster near the MTN science centre. Don't know if still there. One at UCT near computer science section.

what would be helpful is you giving an exact description of the steps you took before you got to the error.

and then posting the error exactly as it appeared (even if you have to write it down and type it here).

would also be helpful if you posted the link you downloaded and also your computer components

it is quite reasonable to expect someone who is new to linux might drop the zero as redundant in naming an ubuntu version

and i'll go against the grain. choosing any number of other distros is just as good. it is said ubuntu is a good starter. while that is probably not false, one thing that will be expected from you in linux is you doing your own research about your issues.

This is also true, never actually thought of it that way.

If this query was posted on the Ubuntu Forums, it would have either been ignored or torn apart. At the very least show that you have tried some sort of problem-solving process, and are not expecting to be spoonfed solutions.

I had the same problem. Check your hard drive. Might be faulty. Changed my hard drive and it loaded with no problems at all.
