I'm not that pleased, but that is just me and my peculiar taste...

You get a Gnome 3 shell and two panels, one top and one bottom. And... there is no way to configure these!
The main gripe I have had with Gnome 3 and Unity seems to have made it's way to Mint, and I'm not happy!
You can boot Gnome, Gnome Classic, Gnome Classic (no effects) and Mate.

Luckily they decided to include Mate, a fork of Gnome 2.3, but this is only a temp solution it seems as the talk on various blogs are that Mint is going to move over to Gnome 3 eventually, citing compatibility issues between Gnome 3 and Mate (Gnome 2). They had to do quite a hack on Mate to get it to play nice with Gnome 3, but I'm despondent atm. I have no idea of what next to throw on the Netbook should Mate not be included in the final Mint 12 or future releases.
In terms of quality, there are concerns about mint4win and MATE. MGSE and the Gnome 3 desktop passed QA with success.

^^ Lots of unhappy users there
I hope they support Mint 11 for some time to come, I'm not updating that it seems for quite some time.

Ill give it a bash when they release the final version. I might just install it alongside my Mint 11 to see if I like it.

Just to add, I just found out that you can customize Gnome 3 with shell extensions, and at this stage they are all over the net, so you'll have to hunt them down.

Gnome 2 is now dead and gone for good, the last bastion of hope has fallen, now to search for an alternative DE that will work just as well on the Netbook.

It seems like it'll have to be XFCE then. In the past the Ubuntu release of XFCE did not play nice with the Netbook and left me pulling out my hair.

Or I'll just have to wait and see if Mint releases a LXDE version again.

EDIT:
A little bit of a rant on Gnome 3...

We have mice with 7+ buttons today, but no, you only need the left click.

Seems like I'll have to bring Apple down on them to force them to consider the other buttons on a mouse as well.
:p

Will google it now. Did not know you can *blush*

I've got ubuntu 11.10 running in virtualbox, Gnome 3 with Mint Gnome Shell Extensions, have not adopted the theme yet but sure it's possible.

No release date yet:
http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1875

If they do not release it at the end of this month then it will probably be in early January IMO, holidays and all that.

I will be pleasantly surprised if they release it in December.

In the blog they mention the fiasco with migrating to Gnome 3, interesting read.

What do you mean?

I tried Kbuntu and I hated it. It looks real pretty and stuff...but I just did not like it. Was a drag to use it.

What advantages do I get for running Mint over Ubuntu? Ubuntu has more support so thats its advantage, what advantage do I have with Mint?

mmm depends on the person I guess. I myself have gotten very lazy and dont feel like adding repo's and downloading codecs blah blah. With Mint everything is done for you out of the box and everything just works...even flash. :) Plus....the new Mint looks so much prettier than Ubuntu! :)

When you install ubuntu all you have to do is tick the check box to download the codecs.... its really not that hard :D

No matter what desktop I get I remake it my own in looks. None of them have the sleek I want :D
