Ok, Ive been trying to install Tomcat on FreeBSD for quite a while now. And well, it just dont work. Now this could even be a hardware problem, so not sure. I'm getting a friend of mine that's pretty damn good with FreeBSD to take a look and see if he can help me.
If it works, great, if it doesnt...

Well, then to my greatest dismay, I'm going to look at using linux.
The server is a P1 200MMX. I'm looking to in the end, run Tomcat, and also some file sharing, like mlnet. I dont want no GUI as that would be useless, and definitly want ssh for access. And have no cdrom.

I want to be able to do the installation of the network through my other machine's ftp server.

So what distro do you recommend to try?

This should really have been posted in the Technical section...but anyhow, I'd recommend having a look at the Knoppix distros - quite kewl and decently secure, well as far as Linux goes [;)]
Why not have a look at NetBSD and OpenBSD as well?

If you don't have a CD, you're going to have some difficulty with any of the bootable CD distros like Knoppix, Morphix, MandrakeMove, Gentoo's LiveCD, etc. You'll have to do an install over a network off an FTP/NFS server, else create bootable stiffies with minimal kernel and networking to get things going first. Nothing wrong with any of the distros or *x flavours mentioned, though my personal preference remains Gentoo...

Lewstherin : I'll put it in the technical section when I ask real technical questions ;)

I dont mind 1 or 2 kernel floppies. But the rest comes off my network from ftp server. The only thing is, unlike FreeBSD I will not sit for days trying to get the java running. If it doesnt run first time, I'm stooping down to Windows NT4.

That's pretty much why I'm not going BSD at all now. Because there isnt a 'official' release of java for those. Where linux is quite well supported by sun.

So this 'Gentoo' you talk about, I'll check it out. Why does Knoppix sound like a configuration nightmare ? :) Hehe, nah, I'll read up about thse distro's and see what I get.

Thanx

Rodent : What youre saying sounds like what I'm looking for.
And yeah :) I dont think mandrake or redhat would be a good idea.

But then again, anything that uses penguins .... ;) hehe
