But extradition would be a long and uncertain process, she cautioned.

Recent announcements that it would ask Interpol to issue a Red Notice for Gupta brothers Atul and Rajesh, their wives, Chetali and Arti, and business associates, Batohi said this meant that Interpol would help South Africa to trace the “outstanding suspects” and then to work with the local authorities where the suspects were to arrest them.

Once they had been arrested, there would be legal processes to determine if they could be extradited.

“And then at the end of those legal processes it becomes a political issue in that the executive then decides whether to surrender the person to the requesting country or not. And that very much depends on political will.

“And so if there was any thought that those who we are seeking to face justice in South Africa would be on the next plane to South Africa, be clear that is a process that will certainly take some time after the arrests of outstanding suspects wherever they might be in the world,” Batohi said.

Lamola agreed that “We really can’t put timelines” on the process. “Sometimes extraditions by their nature become protracted legal processes.” Once the legal processes had been concluded, “the executive will have to make a decision whether to extradite or not in terms of their laws. Whether they are extraditable.”

They were arrested in Dubai. Ramaphosa has no jurisdiction there.
Behind the scense Ramaphosa can put diplomatic pressure on UAE to get them arrested.

Not like the are hiding in some cave. Been living in one of the most expensive homes ever sold in Dubai

Did UAE suddenly out of the blue decide after 5 years to take action?

I am under correction here as I believe my brain has undergone a time-lapse. For how long has the Guptas now been on Interpol's wanted list, and when did the red notices go out? For some reason I am under the impression that it has been 11-12 months, but the red notice was not too long ago.

EDIT,
BACKGROUND | In February, Interpol issued red notices for Atul and Rajesh Gupta

Interpol issued red notices for Atul and Rajesh Gupta – despite the brothers at the centre of the alleged state capture project claiming that the National Prosecuting Authority’s efforts to secure their arrests were politically motivated.

Interpol, however, refused to grant red notices against the pair’s wives, Arthi and Chetali.

Authorities announced in July last year that it had obtained red notices against the brothers and their wives in connection with fraud and money-laundering charges, but later clarified that these notices were still "under consideration" by the Commission for the Control of Interpol's Files.

The last red notices went out in February.

There were red notices in jul 2021 and feb 2022

He might have influence. If there's an extradition the final say lies with the uae executive at which stage it becomes completely political.

It would be very funny if we learn that the treaty hasn't been ratified or even lapsed  That would also be very convenient if this arrest is for drawing attention away from a current matter.
