Live streaming delays and one of DStv's remaining advantages

look there's a blab in this article, but the main headlines.
With existing tech can bring live production from source to user over IP in about 2.5 seconds, live broadcast to sat user is about 2 seconds.

The problem of delay in live broadcast to end user over open web is starting to disappear rapidly.
In UK DTT turn off in the early stages of planning all these problems are getting ironed out quickly.
The edge wont last much longer, something for @Jan to dive in too.

Some interesting claims below. Hmmm

All my channels' streaming (including sport) via the Kodi app shows a consistent 23 odd seconds delay.
Could the app be in need of an update? Who knows, suppose that's possible.

When streaming via browser - no info about any live delay displayed...

Would also be interesting to hear how the mobile networks may affect latency.

“Streaming services across the globe face live streaming delays two to four times worse than that of DStv Stream,” Jury said.

DStv has improved its best-case streaming latency versus satellite from around 23 seconds in 2023 to five seconds in ideal scenarios in 2024.

Typically, the DStv Stream latency will be roughly 10 seconds.
“We’re incredibly proud of these results, considering the global average sits between 20 and 40 seconds,” said Jury.
“DStv Stream’s latency has decreased by up to three times over the past year, a testament to our commitment to deliver as much live sport as close to real-time as we can.”

The company said it uses leading encoding and packaging technologies and works with one of the world’s best content delivery network (CDN) providers to reduce latency.

“Our CDN is distributed throughout sub-Saharan Africa and has max capacity to handle even the most popular Springbok matches,”

DSTV has over 30 years experience with live broadcasting and a decade with live streaming.

And yet their streaming platform is still KAK.

It has improved in the last few months, I'll give them that. BUT - I haven't tried a popular live sports match on the main channels, only with the side channels sometimes offered to lower packages as well.

BTW when I've tried to push the stream forward, quite often I can get to about 10 to 12 seconds delay. Sometimes it holds, usually it slips back after a few minutes.

There were also times during the Olympics when I was incrementally pushed back to about 45 secs. delay on average.

Now this rubbish DSTV streaming app is getting stuck here and not allowing to continue . Is this 9je of your latest features @Brian_G ?

Clear cache, clear data, log in from scratch
Tried all that. The dstv.stream/tv didn't work either so it was then stuck on that screen. The mobile browsers and desktop browsers just gave a blank screen.

But user error probably, I should have downloaded and try Internet Explorer.

Got it working this morning. Now I have countdown adverts showing before watching something.

So that is now the latest feature they implemented are countdown adverts.

Pay R130 on YouTube and get no adverts.

Pay R900 for DSTV and now you get adverts.

This company is desperate to go under.

so ... the global leader in streaming on demand is going to struggle to compete with DSTV when it comes to live streaming given that DSTV has a head start? ... is that the "edge"?

lmfao, DSTV had a multi-decade head start in broadcasting before Netflix even existed, how's that working out for them?

Not seeing any starter ads on any CU movies, series, sport or live TV. Maybe they tested then turned it off for now, just seeing a "DStv Stream" blue intro screen before the CU content launches.
