Live translation coming for AirPods in iOS 19 update

Apple Inc. is planning a new AirPods feature that allows the earbuds to live-translate an in-person conversation into another language, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

The capability will be offered as part of an AirPods software upgrade due later this year, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the effort is private.

While iOS 19 is billed as one of the biggest software updates for iPhones in a long while, it will also unlock a new feature on AirPods users. According to a new report from Bloomberg News, Apple will bring live translation capabilities to its wireless earbuds.

As per the report, AirPods will now offer the ability to translate in-person conversations, and it will be a collaborative effort working in tandem with paired iPhones running iOS 19. The new feature will allow the person wearing AirPods to receive live translation of the unfamiliar language via the earbuds. The person can then talk back in their own language, which will be translated and played back via the paired iPhone’s loudspeakers for the other listener.

Google’s Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Samsung’s Galaxy Buds3 Buds3 Pro already support similar interpreter modes.

The report does not mention which AirPods models will get the new update. The Translate app for iOS was launched back in 2020 and currently supports 19 languages.
