Standerton - An 87-year-old man hanged himself on Monday after his family advised him to stop having an affair with a younger woman, said Mpumalanga police.
Obed Matona was apparently involved with a 50-year-old woman and had started using his pension money on her when his wife and children intervened, said superintendent Abie Khoabane on Wednesday.
"It is alleged that his wife had accused him of failing to build them a proper house because all his money was spent on the new woman," Khoabane said.
He said the old man's children also accused him of not even buying himself shoes, opting to walk barefooted just to please his "young" lover.
Found suicide note
"Even the police were consulted by one of the children at the weekend in a bid to get advice, but on Monday the old man decided to kill himself."
Khoabane said the family discovered a suicide note in one of the bedrooms at 06:00 on Monday, detailing the man's reasons for taking his life.
Khoabane said that the note read: "This woman is the one taking care of me even though all the money still goes to my wife. I am killing myself and I hope you will all be satisfied."
He said the family recovered the body hanging from a tree about half a kilometre from their home in Perdekop near Standerton.
