“These surges and dips in the supply of electricity result in damages to electrical circuits of electronic items, and in some instances result in fires.

I always say that I don't have an alarm system even if I do, because it's really only about a R50 difference in your monthly premium. Your alarm system is just too much of a good excuse for your insurance company to reject your claim.

Me too, hv indicated I don't have one, not prepared to get into that discussion, happy to pay the difference

Nothing if you're smart and don't have household insurance. Just put the R200 you'd be paying the insurer towards buying a surge protector for the fridge and put the rest away in a Tymebank goalsave etc. and when you need to replace something you'll have the cash.
It will take 8. 333 years to save enough to buy my fridge at R200/m.

Your whole house burns down and R500 000 would take much longer to raise at R200p/m

I might agree that paying R300 a month for just a R30 000 cell phone might be bad value.
Whole house burn down at R500 000 ? where do you live.

More in the region of R1mil for an average house with all your belongings inside.

Besides that will be a different insurance claim altogether.

That's why you have at least a surge protector timer on appliances.
