One of our family friends had to do multiple trips to Tanzania to attend mother, father due to their frequent illnesses. Sometimes, there is death in family for some. Overseas trips are not only for fun.next month it's an overseas trip
There was time when we only had ADSL and constant disruptions. If you have fibre or LTE consider yourself fortunateSee bottom comment.
Maybe she started this BECAUSE she can't find a job. Jobs are scarce these days. She's in the middle of nowhere, so her chances are even lower. It's easier to say "move" but do you think someone giving online English classes is has the (tens of) thousands needed to relocate?
See bottom comment.
I started mine with R 200, so I disagree.

See bottom comment, I'll merge my reply to this in there.
I'm lucky that fiber has stayed up for 5 days of no power, but what about all those whose fiber goes down after an hour or two? On the flip side, I'm also unlucky enough to be in an area that loses all cell signal within 10 minutes of the power going out, and during those ten minutes calls fail. Two years ago when we moved here that wasn't the case, but mobile operates seem to have stopped caring to replace tower batteries.
I checked Virginia (as a whole) on a few fiber providers' coverage maps and it's not covered, so I'm pretty sure that her issue is LTE going down.
She could have infinite backup power, but if internet goes down there's not much you can do. If fiber went down, while I DO have the ability to keep the ONT/network/PC running for literally weeks (not for free) via the UPS, battery modules and generator, there's literally nothing I'd be able to do about it other than work elsewhere for the duration (I DO have the ability to travel to family in other surrounding areas).
The replies in this thread show how cut-off many people are from the way the majority lives.
Why didn't you buy house in a fibre connected area - a typical mybb suggestion. There was time when we only had ADSL and constant disruptions. If you have fibre or LTE consider yourself fortunate
Yeah the one I got a few years back works like a charm, but one I did buy last year didn't, friends bought some that have also been working like charms. All these sub-1k mini-ups are like lottery. I returned 2 to geewiz recently but I have one that worked fine since last year.
No matter how you spin this, it's still Eskom's fault. Our failures are always someone else's fault and responsibility in South Africa. We're all in the same boat. You can get a very cheap UPS backup solution for a router and to top up laptop battery life. Adapt or be poor.
It's not typical, it's the truth. Stop being poor is the answer to life...Why didn't you buy house in a fibre connected area - a typical mybb suggestion.
Get better UPS.Even with a UPS or Battery bank, internet dies after 2hrs and LTE goes 30min into load shedding.

Off centred and upside down.
I see a onion.Off centred and upside down.![]()
This is the number one reason why I'm looking to live elsewhere on the globe. I can provide more than enough energy for myself. What I can't do is keep the internet running. Without internet I would fail to be a productive member of society and would be unable to look after myself or my family.I know someone doing the international english teaching thing and this is exactly the problem they face as LTE is the only option at present.
Everyone feels the pain and especially those who work for themselves. You can be backed up to the hilt but if your internet goes down regardless then what does it help?
I'm fortunate in that (for now) my fibre connection behaves itself during load shedding s I'd be truly fscked if that were not the case.
The whole town gets loadshedded. The closest is Welkom, which is about 20km away. She does have legs no?
Get up and go to the nearest place with power and Internet if not using your own mobile data.
I see many people doing this everyday, head to coffee shops or malls during loadshedding
Or go to the nearest friend with power and work from there
