JOHANNESBURG - Two families have called on the Limpopo Health Department to investigate deaths of their relatives at the Letaba Hospital after suspicions that load shedding may have played a role.

An elderly woman and a 17-year-old were admitted to the same Intensive Care Unit this month and died after power outages in the area.

The families blame the shortage of diesel to keep the generators running, but the hospital has strongly denied this.

Phillimon Malatji, whose niece Faith died, says the family is considering legal action.

“She was improving but the nurse who was with her, said to doctor, 'tell them she didn’t die because of load shedding.' and that’s when we got suspicious.”

Meanwhile, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi says he’s written letters to hospitals around the country warning them to stock fuel as they won’t be exempted from load shedding.

Recently my old man was admitted to St Dominics Private in East London. Each time there was loadshedding, the generator would take around 30 seconds to kick in. In those 30 seconds however, ALL the lights and equipment went out. You couldn't see your hand in front of your face. There were patients and visitors stumbling and falling in the passages - with no emergency lighting at all. It was a law-suit waiting to happen... and this is in a private hospital, I'd hate to know what the government hospitals are like.
