Right now I am sitting on 4mb ADSL with a 3gb account, a 2gb account and 2 1gb accounts (all Telkom Internet). This is costing me around R480 per month (not including the fraudulent "line rental" cost).

What I am contemplating is setting up an IPCop proxy/firewall to split my local and international traffic. I then intend to buy a 30GB IS local and a 10GB SAIX international. So far I think I am going to go with WebAfrica. Does this sound like a viable option (it will end up costing R140 more per month but for a hell of a lot more bandwidth). Should I go with WebAfrica? And is IS local decent enough?

Hi Kasyx

Web Africa is definitely the best option to do what you would like to do.

IS isn't too bad.

You may want to consider the 2/28 IS account from OpenWeb for R159pm (R182pm with WebAfrica). R19 more than the 30Gb local, but you get 2+ extra international gigs. Openweb also sells SAIX 10Gb R31pm cheaper than WebAfrica.

If I got a 2/28 IS account how would I split the traffic effectively (considering if it is the local-traffic only account, the additional 2gb won't get used?)

Just looking in to my budget, I may not be able to afford a 30GB local cap. Is there anywhere that sells 20GB? or does it just go from 10gb to 30gb?

Use it as international & local until depleted. I start each each month on these accounts and bomb the cap asap. You get 3 to 4 Gigs of international bandwdith, and when it's done, you are left with a perfectly good local only account.

If you are going to skimp, cut down to 5Gigs SAIX for R239. With the money you save, you can even get some local only SAIX for R15 per Gig.

The thing is I use a lot more international than I do local, so I need the 10GB international. I would rather skimp out on the local because the only real local browsing I do is myadsl and my bank. Though there are always the news servers...

Well, why not skip IS completely and get your 10Gb SAIX (R459pm) and 5Gb Saix Local (R75pm from Axxess). Your experience with the SAIX newsreader will be far more satisfying than IS's newsreader... by a country mile.
