Hi

I will be travelling to France and Spain in September (a week in each).

I'd like to buy a local sim card and data bundle for my iPhone to use whilst there. I'd prefer to be able to use the same sim card and data bundle in both countries.

Is this possible? Any advice on what to get and where to get it?

I'm on a Vodacom contract in South Africa.

You're probably better off searching for info on travel & overseas tech forums.

Use keywords like :
"France Spain local sim whirlpool forums"
"tripadvisor france spain sim"

These seem to be the most recent links with info ; haven't read through them, so don't know if they'll match your requirements altogether.

I used SFR in France, worked very well and reasonable cost.

I used Orange on a previous trip, but they were too expensive the last time round.

Roaming within Europe is cheaper, but may still be expensive, especially data roaming.

May be better to get another sim for Spain.

Can't help with Spain but I used the Lebara brand when I visited France and it worked right out of the package. I purchased it from one of the "Tabac" shops before even leaving the airport. Registration just involved sending my ID Number after inserting the SIM card and I then had instant access but that might have changed since last year.

Great resources:

I would recommend to use Free or Bouygues Telecom which are the cheaper ones in prepaid in France, and Movistar, Yoigo in Spain.

Costs for calls between UE countries are quite cheap but roaming for data and on most of the operators impossible on prepaid is still extremely expensive so I would recommend you to take one sim in each country.

They will only ask for your passport.

By the way, I'm french so if you have any other question, don't hesitate !

I'm not so sure of how the tariffs evolved but Movistar, Orange and Vodafone are the most common in Spain, Yoigo the low cost one so just pick the one with the most fit for purpose formula. They all have good coverage.

Barcelona pretty much all the Gaudi stuff, the Born, Picasso museum, Palau. I think guides should say the same. Beware of the pickpockets in Barcelona.

I've only been to Valencia when I was a kid so can't really help.

Madrid, I've lived there so I know much more, obviously the Prado, Palacio Real, Retiro, Plaza Mayor, tapas in la Latina. If you have time to get out of Madrid, go to Aranjuez and the Escorial.

I'd say that Madrid has more cultural things to see, Barcelona has the beach and is more lively and modern. You can try to do the two as it's only a few hours of high speed train away.

Enable VoWiFi (if your phone is supported) to be in touch with friends and family. Disable international roaming on this SIM before leaving SA and get local SIM with data bundle as people say.
