Ah, the still upgrade for the Grainfather. Nice. Proper R25k or so of kit standing there.

Yip, he's spent around the R30k mark on his setup, so not DIY. Comes from some place in Centurion IIRC. That pic's just part of his complete setup.

more expensive hobbies :p just a question a still needs to be registered - im talking legally and more for interest sake would that still upgrade need that as well?
Yes. Registration is between R1 and R2 per year, depending on your metro.

25k? For real?

So maybe a bit more then. Grainfather also costs a pretty penny. I was very anti-GF for a long time due to the cost, but then I brewed with another MyBB member on one one Saturday and all I can say is "damn".

I called the no on the website... He actually answered.
But yeah, he said 24 hours gives roughly 4% so not much of a kick.
The guy recommends that I leave it for 2 days after which it hits around 6% and is a bit less sweet.
He mentioned that he has clients that use this as a wash for their own home stills so can probably go even higher than 6%...
I've got a hydrometer somewhere so will google how to use it and do my own tests.
Got 6L busy brewing atm, very curious!

I am using this one

Some tips.
The chilli - be very careful, it has a definite chilli bite to it from adding 1 x red chilli. Next batch I am thinking of either dropping that to 1/3 of a chilli or leaving it out.

200g of ginger is quite a lot of ginger and it comes through in the end result.

I pitched a full 10g sachet of yeast into 5L. I would go with less as it had a massive yeast smell that was off-putting.

If you find it very dry or bitter when done, add in some sugar into the glass before pouring. I discovered yesterday that it is frikken delicious as a shandy. I do 1/2 ginger beer and half lemonade and it adds that sweetness and also ups the carbonation level. Bonus of reducing the chilli kick but I am not a huge chilli fan.
aweome thanks :)

Don't think it'll do 4% in 24 hours, honestly. That's 30 gravity points in 24 hours. Not unheard of, but I doubt it.

Just checked the gravity on my brews and I reckon the ginger beer and the liquifruit cider are going to kick like angry ostriches. The ginger beer still has a massive yeast cake on it after four days! The mango and orange tastes really lekker.
Lockdown Blonde #2 is down to 1.012 so getting ready for the bottle.
Lockdown Blonde #1 is now in the fridge getting ready for her big day tomorrow.

Okay brewmasters, I'm almost ready to start but just want some advice first please:

I am using g a 20lt bucket to ferment in. How many pineapples, sugar and yeast for that quantity?

Has anyone tried the plain recipe and a batch with other additives like cinnamon etc and which did you prefer?

I have white and brown sugar. Which is preferred and how different is the resulting taste? Or a combination of both?
