lol, how did BusinessTech only realise now that TrueCaller isn't POPI compliant?

It's kinda funny that most people still don't know that whoever has TrueCaller on their phone is sharing their contacts' info across the border to India. I'm sure their privacy protections are in place and that they respect the direct opt-in requirements and all that xD.

I wonder what would happen if I contact TrueCaller and ask them who their Information Officer is?

The root cause needs to be blamed for the apps existence and widespead usage. Telemarkers mostly.

If you not giving it access to your contacts how is it sharing your info?

The problem is, in a court of law in South Africa, the prosecution has to prove above all reasonable doubt that the person who downloaded and used the app is a technical professional who knew all technical aspects of the app and what it does and that the person knew he was in breach of the act when he installed the app, that he committed a crime and still proceeded in doing this.

The problem with POPI and this app is that it is not possible to prove this in any court of law.

They have the exact same problem with torrents. If you install the program and download something, your PC is used for sharing files. You are committing an offence, but they have never charged a single person in court as they cannot prove that users are technical professionals who knew how the software works and that they are committing crimes.

So, even though this may be in breach of the POPI act, it is not something they will arrest and prosecute people for. Government should rather look at banning the app in SA and getting app stores to remove it.

Before you spew uneducated nonsense on a public forum, did they upload or download?

I want you to show everyone any arrest made for someone who downloaded... not uploaded.
Oh the irony - you having the absolute gall to accuse anyone of spewing uneducated nonsense on a public forum, you - you of all ppl.!!

For your uneducated info, uploaded as well as torrents for the movie "4 corners"

Educate yourself a little before spewing more crap

Here, some spoonfeeding

Uploading and sharing is illegal.

Downloading, using and being in possession of pirated content is not a crime in SA.

Once upon a time we used to print everyone’s address and number in a big book which was freely distributed every year. Somehow we survived.
We also played outside and rode bikes until the streetlights came on, it was safe, we had no phones our parents just expected us back at home when dark, what happened?

You know whats also not POPI compliant Ahmore Burger-Smidt? All your big corporate clients who refuse to remove my number from their marketing databases and insist on hiding behind their service providers who spam me every.single.week despite me asking ad nauseum to be removed.

But no, let's focus on evil TrueCaller...

You had the option to be unlisted...

It's surprising how much the bigboys get away with regarding your own personal info. I had to fight Cell C for years to not send me marketing calls. At the end of the day I just started wasting the sales persons time, way more effective and they seem to get the message. Just tell them you're interested but unemployed, then try to convince them to sell to you anyways xD
