London blasts congest Telkom
Jul 07 2005 04:51:41:803PM
Johannesburg - Telkom has announced that it was experiencing significant traffic congestion on the South Africa-UK route in the wake of Thursday morning's blasts in London.
The incidents have put people into panic mode since news of the blasts ricocheted around the world, resulting in about 50 000 call attempts from South Africa to the UK between 12:00 and 14:00 - local time - not successfully completed, the company added.
However, the voice traffic jam is no indication of network failure, and the network successfully routed 500 000 calls to the UK during the specified two-hour period.
All other Telkom global routes are working as usual.
None of the group's international infrastructure has been affected by the blasts.
All overflow routes for the UK have been blocked to prevent flooding of traffic via Belgium, Switzerland and IDT.
UK-destined calls stabilised at around 14:00 after call control and network management initiatives were implemented.
People in South Africa making UK-destined calls are advised not to continuously redial but to wait a few minutes between dial attempts.
The company said it was monitoring the situation and that additional network traffic management actions will be performed if necessary.
Mobile phone operator Cell C said its network was running smoothly without any glitches while MTN and Vodacom were yet to comment.
