Cape Town - Long-distance bus company Intercape has written to President Cyril Ramaphosa pleading for him to intervene and champion the company’s drivers and employees, who are falling victim to a bitter feud with taxi drivers.

The plea comes after the death of one of Intercape’s drivers, who was shot outside the company’s Cape Town depot in what Intercape believes to be a campaign of violence and extortion against the long-distance coach industry by rogue elements within the minibus taxi industry.

The driver, a 35-year-old man from Lower Crossroads, succumbed to his injuries after days in hospital.

Intercape CEO Johann Ferreira said: “We have been pleading with authorities to act urgently before innocent people are killed. Now it is too late, and we at Intercape have been left utterly devastated to learn of the passing of our colleague.

“The long-distance train system in South Africa has been systematically burnt, and infrastructure destroyed and stolen by thugs and thieves and certain criminal elements within the taxi industry.

We've lost the war unfortunately. There is nothing that can be done.

R.I.P.

Only option is private armed security and preparing each day for a battle.

Taxi operators chase away mourners heading for shot bus driver’s funeral

Taxi operators prevented mourning family members from attending the funeral of a slain Intercape coach driver in the Eastern Cape on Friday.

Bangikhaya Machana, 35, was shot outside the Intercape depot in Cape Town on April 25. He died in Tygerberg Hospital three days later.

Intercape provided a bus to take more than 50 members of the extended Machana family and friends from Cape Town to the driver's hometown of Idutywa, where his funeral was due to take place on Saturday.

Intercape CEO Johann Ferreira said when the bus entered Idutywa it was chased away, and headed to a police station to offload passengers.

“The taxis followed them and one of our drivers went inside the police station to get help. The police did not want to come out to help,” said Ferreira

This is simply decolonization. From a sophisticated economy, into pure rent-seeking and protection rackets with more legitimate businesses closing their doors every day.

TIA.

Man, 28, faces murder charge over shots fired at Intercape buses

A 28-year-old man allegedly involved in deadly attacks on Intercape long-distance buses made his first appearance in the Bishop Lavis magistrate’s court in Cape Town on Monday.

Unathi Sitsili is charged with one count of murder and three of attempted murder

“His appearance follows a spate of shootings of Intercape buses in March and April 2022. He is charged under schedule 6 and the state will oppose his bail application,” said National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila.

Not just busses. If you have your own company e.g. construction and you have a vehicle to transport your own staff then you have to pay extortion money to the taxi bosses. If you don't make arrangements with them they confiscate your vehicle. The commuters are the assets of the taxi bosses.

Because it is a cash business they also don't pay tax as they never declare the income
