Hey guys
Which cars by company or model last longer than most?
Im looking for a new car now and looking for a happy balance between long lasting (as can get higher mileage second hand cars without much concern of longevity) and fuel cost.
I'm toying with getting a 4x4, bakkie or stationwagon.

many thanks
Will

Very much depends on how well they're maintained, how they are driven, whether it's frequent stop start driving or lots of long freeway stretches...

That aside, I would probably rate toyotas as right up there in the reliability stakes (I have never owned one).

Toyota Hilux gets my vote, as you seem to want something with some off-road capability.

Second prize would be an older Pajero, but the secondhand prices of these are mental.

I don't know of any 'reliable' station wagons, as they are a niche in SA anyways so you don't have much to choose from. Off the top of my head, you will either need to go Volvo, Audi, Honda or BMW. I think Subaru is also in the SW game.

If you can find a BMW 320d Touring, it should last you a very long time and cost you very little in the way of fuel, comparatively speaking.

Yeah I drove a second-hand Pajero for a very long time and then sold it for a good price. It's one of those cars that just kept on going.

Toyota Land Cruiser.
Toyota Hilux.
Toyota Fortuner.

Anyone who suggests something else should be sent to the gallows.

All the reliable 4x4s like Hilux/Fortuner etc will be reliable for a long time, it might just be reliable in someone else's hands over the border though.

I'd look at a Mitsubishi Pajero rather.

Stay away from small turbo charged engines. Those tiny highly stung engines will never last as long as their naturally aspirated bigger displacement counterparts.

Depends on what you mean by tiny. My 1.5dci Nissan Micra has over 200 000 km on and hasn't had a single issue.

My wife has a 2014 Duster with the 1.5l dCi engine. It is part of the Renault/Nissan K9K engine family. I have a Nissan Micra 1.5l dCi, same engine family. Her car has close to 100 000km and mine has over 200 000 km. No issues at all. Just make sure to service them regularly.

You're on borrowed time. Do a turbo and compression test on that engine... You'll find you're probably on the limit of what's deemed "acceptable".

Isuzu Frontier. You'll have to pry the keys from the current owner's cold dead hands if you can find one.

I suppose a Hilux would also do, but the Frontier is a bakkie, and a 4x4, and a stationwagon all in one. Wif a hilux you just get a bakkie...

Agree with this post. Especially if the vehicle has the 2.8 litre Turbo Diesel engine. Those vehicles are bulletproof and most now have several 100 000 km on them.

The bakkie version was known as the KB and there is one with 1.7 million km on it:
